Chapter 18
Overview
Isabelle smuggles RAF pilot Torrance MacLeish out of her apartment and delivers him to Lévy and Anouk’s resistance cell, then pushes them toward a bold escape route: leading airmen on foot across the Pyrenees into Spain. The network commits to planning the operation, and Gaëtan’s reappearance complicates Isabelle emotionally while confirming he has been steering her into the group from the start. Back home, Isabelle’s father confronts her and reveals he has been working with Lévy all along as a master forger, forcing Isabelle to accept a permanent underground identity as Juliette Gervaise.
Summary
Isabelle secretly checks on the downed airman hidden behind her armoire and brings him a chamber pot and supplies. Lieutenant Torrance MacLeish confirms he is RAF and stranded since his crash near Reims. Isabelle admits she has no firm plan yet but promises to take him to her underground contacts and start arranging a route back to Britain.
After her father leaves the apartment in the morning, Isabelle steals his old clothes for MacLeish and warns him to move quietly because people downstairs may notice extra footsteps. Disguised poorly in the too-small outfit, MacLeish follows Isabelle at a distance across Paris in broad daylight as whistles, shouts, and even gunshots punctuate the streets. Isabelle reaches Anouk’s resistance apartment on rue de Saint-Simon and brings MacLeish inside, forcing the group to confront the urgent problem of extracting airmen.
Anouk and Monsieur Lévy are alarmed that Isabelle acted on her own, but Isabelle presses for a solution. As they discuss routes, Isabelle argues they can move airmen into Spain by crossing the Pyrenees, insisting that “nearly impossible” is still possible and that a young woman could pass checkpoints more easily. Gaëtan is called in and reacts sharply to the risk, but the group decides the plan is worth attempting; Lévy assigns tasks, including getting money through Gaëtan’s contact, and they begin mapping routes, supplies, and safe houses.
After hours of planning, Isabelle refuses to stay the night to avoid arousing her father’s suspicion and sneaks home through the blacked-out streets. Near her building, Gaëtan intercepts her in the dark and admits he was the one who recommended Isabelle to the network and had Didier watching her to keep her safe. The two share a tense, intimate exchange: Gaëtan apologizes for hurting her, says he wanted to forget her, then leaves with a warning to be careful.
Isabelle is abruptly pulled into her apartment by her father, who has been waiting in the dark and has noticed evidence of the hidden airman. He reveals he knows Isabelle took MacLeish to Lévy because Lévy is his friend and handler; Isabelle’s father has been working in the resistance all along. He tells Isabelle her life must change immediately: she must live underground, trust no one, and permanently become Juliette Gervaise. He provides a new contact, Micheline Babineau in Urrugne, demands photographs of the airmen, and finally admits he forges papers at the German high command—he even created Isabelle’s Juliette identity—leaving Isabelle shaken by a new, fragile connection with him.
