Chapter 23
Overview
Evie returns to Trystan's office, apologizes for quitting impulsively, and asks for her job back. In a rare moment of vulnerability, Trystan apologizes for falsely accusing her and admits he overreacted about the letter. Their reconciliation restores their dynamic—complete with playful banter about his night-light—and ends with Evie's simple declaration that she wants to know him, which unsettles Trystan deeply because he realizes he might actually want that, too.
Summary
Trystan is brooding in his office near the end of the day when a soft knock interrupts him. He warns the intruder away, but the door opens regardless—and the voice that greets him is Evie Sage's. She references blowing up half the parapet, and Trystan is flooded with an emotion he finds repulsive: happiness. He shoves his hands in his pockets and tries to mask his reaction as she begins to explain herself.
Evie tells Trystan that feeling incapable triggers something irrational in her, and that not being able to care for the people she needs to terrifies her. She acknowledges his right to keep secrets but confesses that his accusation of deceitfulness hurt her deeply. She then surprises him by apologizing for quitting so abruptly, admitting her emotions got the better of her, and formally asks for her job back. Trystan is visibly stunned and struggles to contain his eagerness when he asks if she truly wants to return.
Overcome with guilt at her openness and courage, Trystan attempts his own apology—something clearly foreign to him. He blurts out "I'm sorry" in a higher-pitched voice, shocking Evie into silence. The tension breaks when he accidentally reveals he uses a night-light because he's been afraid of the dark since childhood. Evie delights in this confession and shares her own fear of ladybugs, lightening the mood considerably. Their easy banter returns as Trystan formally acknowledges he overreacted about the letter, confirms Blade told him the truth, and assures Evie that Blade is alive, unharmed, and still employed.
Trystan offers Evie her job back and proposes they start over. Evie shakes his hand and reintroduces herself playfully, asking whether to call him "sir" or "Evil Overlord." He sends her off to fetch fried food and sugary cauldron brew from the kitchen but stops her at the door with a vulnerable question: why does she want his trust? Evie answers simply, "I want to know you, that's all." After she leaves, Trystan slides to the floor, shaken by the realization that for the first time in a decade, letting someone know him doesn't sound so terrible—even as he senses she may eventually be the death of him.
