Chapter Sixteen
Overview
Summary
The morning after restoring the trees, Kiela checks her garden, decides to make blueberry jam, and properly opens the shop. She reflects on whether to tell Larran about the unicorn and the spellwork, concluding she cannot risk it, but plans to bring him and Bryn jars of blueberry jam.
Eadie the centaur arrives, delighted that her grandfather's cherry tree was saved by Kiela's remedy. She insists on paying five pieces of silver, sharing the tree's emotional family history, and prepays for five more remedies to be delivered in town. Encouraged, Kiela and Caz make another batch of pine cone remedies, and Kiela sets off into town with jam and remedies, accompanied briefly by an apple-blossom bird.
In town, Kiela finds the streets oddly empty, shutters closed, and a harbor bell tolling. Fenerer, the scaled man, confronts her, accusing her of causing unnatural happenings—specifically a singing apple tree in the orchard. He suspects her without proof. Eadie intervenes, scolding Fenerer and driving him off. Kiela discreetly hands Eadie the remedies.
Inside the bakery, Bryn explains a storm is imminent—the blue-purple clouds and harbor alarm signal everyone to take shelter. Bryn offers Kiela a bed, but Kiela refuses, worried about Caz alone at the cottage. Bryn gives her cinnamon rolls and closes up.
As Kiela hurries back, the storm bursts violently. Rain pours, wind whips, and the cliff stairs sway dangerously, impossible to climb. With water flooding the streets and waves crashing, Kiela turns toward Larran's house, the closest shelter, hoping he'll welcome her unexpected visit.
