Kiela helps Larran tend to the unconscious red-haired woman he rescued from the storm. The woman is warm and breathing but won't wake. Larran frets over possible internal injuries and decides to fetch Ivor, the island's healer, once the storm passes. He notes the woman isn't from Caltrey, and Kiela suspects from her single-color fire-red hair that she may be a lesser noble who fled the unrest in Alyssium. Kiela almost confesses why she left the capital, but the storm abruptly ends before she can.

The storm vanishes as suddenly as it began, leaving the sky torn with fading colors. Worried about Caz alone at her cottage, Kiela offers to fetch Ivor on her way home, since Larran cannot leave the rescued woman alone. Larran gives her directions to the waterfall atop the cliff and urges her to hurry safely. As she leaves wearing his shirt, she notices he has already turned back to the rescued woman, and she chides herself for thinking their connection was something more.

Kiela climbs the damaged cliff stairs cautiously, lunging across broken steps. At the top, she sees the storm's debris and winged cats sheltered in villagers' attics. Near the waterfall, she calls for Ivor, who emerges from behind the spray—a small man with massive antlers, green feet, and a brown leather cloak. He recognizes her as the one who healed Eadie's cherry tree and praises her remedy.

Kiela explains the situation, and Ivor agrees to hurry to Larran, but pointedly tells her he wants a conversation about her remedies afterward, knowing where to find her. As he leaves, his cloak unfurls into leathery dragon-like wings, and he glides off the cliff. Unsettled by his suspicion of her magic but desperate to check on Caz, Kiela pushes the worry aside and runs into the forest toward home.
