Chapter Thirty-Five

Overview

The coven successfully casts the forbidden spell, dispelling the storm and causing flowers to rain over Caltrey. When Captain Varrik returns and confronts the obvious magic, Caz reveals his origins and the group convinces Varrik to choose conscience over law. He publicly attributes the miracle to a traveling sorcerer and leaves Caltrey—and Radane—in peace.

Summary

Inside Bryn's bakery, the coven—Kiela, Larran, Bryn, Eadie, Radane, Ivor, with Caz and Meep anchoring the spell and Ulina conducting—forms a circle and begins chanting the storm-stopping spell phonetically copied by Caz. As the storm worsens and seawater floods into the bakery, they repeat the incantation a second and third time. Eadie falters but recovers, and finally the wind dies, the floodwaters recede, and the sky clears.

Stepping outside, they discover flowers of many colors falling from the sky in place of rain. The villagers emerge to marvel, and winged cats play in the petals. Larran reassures Kiela that although some ships were damaged, the homes, people, and even the imperial warship were saved by their spell. Radane retreats inside to remain hidden.

The damaged warship returns to harbor, and Captain Varrik rows ashore. He notes the obvious magical aftermath and acknowledges that laws against unsanctioned spellwork still stand, though they are slowly changing. Caz unexpectedly joins them on the dock, revealing his existence and identifying himself as the illegal creation of librarian Terlu Perna, who was transformed into wood and died in the library fire. Caz passionately denounces the empire's laws.

Kiela, Larran, Caz, and Meep press Varrik to choose mercy over duty, arguing he has no proof and that pursuing this would derail his mission. Varrik privately asks whether Radane is safe and content; reassured she wants an ordinary life, he publicly announces that a traveling sorcerer dispelled the storm, orders his crew to help with repairs, and departs without looking back.

Relieved, Kiela credits Caz with their success. Larran embraces her, and she carries Caz, with Meep in her pocket, off the dock through the flower-strewn town.
