Chapter 23
Overview
Summary
The chapter opens with a passage from the detective novel Viv is reading, in which Beckett insists the apparent murder scene is a deception staged by Aramy, and that Lady Marden is still alive. Viv is interrupted by Maylee arriving for her appointment to escort her to Highlark's office.
As they walk through Murk after the storm, Viv notes Gatewardens patrolling the wall, evidence Iridia is taking the threat of Varine seriously. Viv recounts the events with Balthus and Satchel to Maylee, who insists on meeting the homunculus and dismisses Viv's concerns about endangering her friends. Maylee's presence also softens Highlark, who treats Viv professionally and applies a salve to reduce stiffness and scarring; Maylee credits her sourdough loaves for his good behavior.
Returning to Thistleburr, Viv finds Satchel out of his bag and sweeping the shop. Fern admits she couldn't bear to leave him stowed away and that he insisted on being useful. Viv worries about exposure, but Fern argues that hiding the bag is enough and that they're doomed anyway if Varine appears. Viv concedes.
Gallina arrives, and the three press Satchel about his future. He insists he must always serve a master, though he tentatively expresses a wish to "simply be" and serve as he chooses. When Gallina asks what else Balthus stole from Varine besides Satchel himself, Satchel says the Lady's secrets bind him and abruptly changes the subject to organizing the shop, eyeing a bookshelf with unusual intensity. He stills meaningfully when Gallina mentions confronting Varine but says nothing. Viv notes his strange behavior but lets it pass, then heads up the bluff with Gallina for a workout.
