Chapter 17
Overview
Summary
Maylee invites Viv onto a borrowed dinghy moored at the pier. Despite Viv's bad leg and concerns about the boat's small size, she awkwardly climbs in with Maylee's help. Maylee rows them out around the northern promontory while Viv slowly relaxes, taking in the sun and water.
They coast into a shaded cove beneath the cliffs. Maylee pulls out a stale loaf of bread and reveals it's not for them but for the fish. They feed a school of peachgills together, enjoying the quiet.
Maylee then produces a bottle of gin and two tumblers, joking she only brought Viv along to liquor her up. They toast to chance meetings. As the gin warms her, Viv finds herself staring at Maylee with growing attraction, then catches herself and flushes.
Viv asks Maylee about her mercenary days. Maylee shares a memory of being south of Cardus, hunting a bandit named Voss, when she encountered a red-haired goblin girl from Voss's crew across a wide river one morning. Both were washing pans, and after staring silently at each other, they wordlessly returned to their tasks. Maylee says that was the moment she knew she was done with mercenary life. Viv refrains from asking whether the goblin survived their later encounter.
