Overview

Vis and Aequa turn the chariot race into a tactical fight, using Vis’s unusual awareness of imbued wheels to harry Indol and break the clean partnership between Indol and Iro. The race grows deadly as Marcellus crashes and Indol wrecks Felix, leaving the final contest to Vis, Aequa, Iro, and Indol.

In the last lap, Indol appears to abandon Iro rather than ram Vis, and Iro responds with increasingly reckless attacks. Vis then reveals a startling new capability by taking control of Iro’s Will after Iro imbues Vis’s chariot, survives the final trap by jumping clear, and keeps Aequa moving long enough for her to take the victory.

Summary

Vis survives the violent start of the chariot race by forcing speed into Aequa’s horse while learning, almost by instinct, how to handle his own unstable vehicle. As the first laps unfold, Vis realizes he can sense every imbued stone wheel on the track, not just Aequa’s, and uses that awareness to protect her from attacks and coordinate their plan. Following Livia’s advice, Vis and Aequa stop trying to outrun Iro and Indol cleanly and instead begin disrupting Indol so he cannot fully support Iro’s lead.

Vis grows steadier as the race continues, pushing hard through the corners while Aequa expertly hounds Indol from behind. Their pressure works: Indol is forced to think about defending himself instead of only powering Iro. Vis closes on Felix and Marcellus, but when Marcellus panics at Vis’s approach and overcorrects in a turn, Marcellus’s chariot flips and disintegrates. Vis drives straight through the wreckage, barely staying aboard, and emerges alive and now behind only Iro.

With Marcellus out, the field compresses again. Vis stays close to Iro while Aequa keeps Indol occupied and Felix remains trapped in the fight. Indol then escalates brutally, leaning out of his chariot and smashing a support on Felix’s vehicle. Felix is dragged from the wreck, but his remaining imbued Will suggests he survives. That leaves Vis, Aequa, Iro, and Indol as the only real contenders entering the final lap.

On the last circuit, Iro makes a slight mistake and Vis seizes the inside line, threatening to overtake him. Indol and Iro then try to spring a trap: Indol checks his speed to force Aequa away and create space for a ram on Vis. But at the critical moment Indol swerves wide instead of striking, enraging Iro and leaving Aequa free to recover and drive Vis forward again. Iro responds by repeatedly slamming Vis’s chariot, then suddenly reaches across and imbues Vis’s vehicle with his own Will to tip and destroy it.

As Vis feels Iro’s Will inside the chariot, he uses his unusual connection ability to seize control of that imbuing and stabilize the vehicle. Iro, believing Vis is still doomed, commits to a final suicidal collision in the last corner. Realizing Iro may die if the crash happens, Vis unchains himself, pulls Iro’s borrowed Will into his own body for protection, and jumps clear. Iro’s empty chariot crashes, while Vis keeps enough concentration to continue guiding Aequa. Aequa crosses the finish line first, winning the race for their side.
