Overview

Vis infiltrates Duat, turns a staged disturbance into a real breach, and reaches the bridge over the Infernis, the city’s only direct link between east and west. By destroying it, he forces the Nomarch and Ka’s defenses to react and draws Gleaners out of position, proving the sabotage matters strategically. The victory comes at extreme cost, because the bridge collapses under him and Vis survives only by plunging into the Infernis and escaping through a hidden drain.

Summary

Vis crosses the wasteland to Duat’s eastern entrance disguised in white wrappings and times his approach to slip in behind iunctii hauling a massive stone block. Once inside, he cuts his palms so his stolen golden crook and flail will activate. An iunctus notices him, the nearby Overseer identifies the threat, and Vis kills the Overseer with the crook in a grotesque instant, horrifying the workers and confirming the weapons’ devastating power.

Knowing he can no longer remain covert, Vis smashes through the inner door and into Duat, then kills three more charging Overseers. He uses the chaos only as a diversion, not as his true objective. After ducking into quieter alleys, he strips off his blood-soaked clothes, retrieves a hidden change of garments, and uses the blending techniques Netiqret taught him to move through the alerted city without being singled out.

Vis reaches a secret tunnel, travels beneath the river into Duat’s west, and emerges near the Infernis and the bridge that serves as the only direct route between the city’s two halves. At the bridge entrance he finds only three Overseers guarding it, fewer than usual. He kills them in seconds, runs onto the exposed span, and begins carving through the black stone with his crook, trying to sever Duat’s vital connection.

The first cut cracks the bridge but does not bring it down, so Vis realizes he must destroy an entire middle section. As Overseers rush from both ends and Gleaners launch into the air from the temple and Neter-khertet, he understands the Nomarch has recognized his target and that his sabotage is forcing a real response. Vis keeps cutting while fighting off waves of Overseers, determined to make enough damage that the Gleaners cannot simply return to their posts.

At the last moment, with Gleaners almost upon him, Vis drives the crook deep into the remaining stone and finally triggers the collapse. The bridge shatters beneath everyone on it, dropping Vis, Overseers, and rubble into the Infernis. Under the acidic water, his Vitaeria and raised weapons keep him alive while the Overseers continue attacking even as the river melts them apart; unable to surface because Gleaners wait above, Vis spots the hidden drainage opening and lets the current drag him into darkness.
