29. Ballad Of The Ajun Gate
Overview
Saeris reforges Danya’s shattered blade with cooperative quicksilver, enlisting Lorreth to carve and cast a wolf-headed pommel while Kingfisher watches in tense, quiet support. When the quicksilver demands its promised “song,” an ancient aurora appears and Lorreth’s ballad seals the bargain—only for the quicksilver to erase the song from everyone’s memory but Saeris’s. Because Lorreth was the first to bleed on the new edge, the quicksilver claims him as its chosen bearer, and the newly named Avisiéth proves it can channel magic in a violent burst of rune-lit power.
Summary
Saeris works through punishing heat in the forge, smelting the shards of Danya’s sword with quicksilver that—unusually—stays silent and cooperative, as if watching to see whether Saeris can keep her promise. Knowing she needs help with parts of the build, Saeris goes out into the snow to find Lorreth and discovers him humiliating Carrion in a throwing-dagger bet; Saeris needles Carrion for losing, then asks Lorreth if he can carve wood for the sword’s fittings.
Back in the forge, Saeris spends hours repeatedly heating, folding, hammering, and shaping the new blade far past what exhaustion should allow, driven by a stubborn certainty it still is not ready. Lorreth delivers an expertly carved wolf’s head pommel that resembles Kingfisher’s tattoo and the Lupo Proelia emblem, then follows Saeris’s instructions to create a casting mold—digging for clay in frozen ground and mixing it with manure—so the pommel can be cast properly. Carrion, worn down by the heat, eventually collapses to sleep on the forge floor.
Kingfisher reaches Saeris through their mind-link, urging her to rest, then admits he has been nearby for hours but stayed outside because he did not know if Saeris wanted him there. Saeris invites Kingfisher in, and he sits quietly watching while Saeris and Lorreth finish the casting, assemble the hilt and guard, and wrap the grip with black-and-gold cord. Saeris engraves a central line of words down the blade: By righteous hands, deliverance of the unrighteous dead.
When the sword is finally complete, Lorreth lifts it in awe, immediately nicking his finger just by testing the edge. The quicksilver speaks clearly at last, demanding its promised “song,” and outside an ancient aurora blooms across the sky. As the three watch, Lorreth—overwhelmed—sings a powerful ballad of Ajun Gate, Omnamshacry the drake, and Kingfisher’s past heroism; Kingfisher visibly hates hearing the story dragged into the open, but the performance continues until it ends in aching triumph.
As Carrion wakes, the quicksilver declares the bargain fulfilled and reveals it has judged “the first to bleed upon our blade,” meaning Lorreth has been chosen as the weapon’s bearer. Lorreth panics about Danya’s reaction, while Kingfisher finds the outcome darkly fitting, and Saeris realizes the quicksilver has claimed Lorreth rather than the other way around. Saeris then discovers something stranger: the ballad has been taken from the world—Lorreth, Kingfisher, and Carrion no longer remember it—while Saeris alone retains it because the quicksilver remembers and “the Alchemist remembers.”
Saeris presses the quicksilver on whether the reforged blade can channel magic, and it commands Lorreth to hold it with both hands and name it. Though conflicted, Lorreth accepts the “privilege” and names the sword Avisiéth: The Unsung Song. Redemption’s Dawn. Blue flame races down the blade, burning new runes into the metal, and a blinding pillar of white energy erupts skyward, shaking the ground as the sword’s magic fully awakens.
