14. The Fine Print
Overview
Saeris realizes Kingfisher brought back Carrion Swift instead of Hayden, but Kingfisher insists the bloodline tracking and Carrion’s claim satisfied his side of their bargain. He reveals the blood oath’s true “fine print”: Saeris must obey and assist him in whatever way he demands, and she physically cannot resist his orders.
With Belikon a looming threat, Kingfisher rushes Saeris out of the Winter Palace through secret routes, saddles horses, and flees into the snow with Carrion strapped to his mount. Outside, Saeris experiences snow and stars for the first time and learns quicksilver can bridge realms among those distant suns, widening the stakes beyond a single city.
Summary
Saeris recognizes the unconscious man Kingfisher dragged back through the quicksilver as Carrion Swift, not her brother, Hayden. She accuses Kingfisher of rushing and frightening Carrion into lying, but Kingfisher insists the bloodline trail and Carrion’s own claim identified him as “Hayden Fane,” and he had to fight through Madra’s palace defenses to return within the hour. Still bleeding from multiple wounds, Kingfisher declares the bargain fulfilled on his end and orders Saeris to move.
Kingfisher hauls Carrion through hidden palace routes, using his knowledge of secret stairs and passages. Saeris discovers she cannot disobey his commands or even speak when ordered silent, realizing the blood oath has taken control of her body. Kingfisher leaves her waiting in a passage while he finds a healer; when he returns cleaned and repaired, he says he could not find Ren and left him a note, then continues downward carrying a long, thin bundle wrapped in cloth.
They reach the palace stables, where Kingfisher begins saddling horses despite Saeris’s fear and dislike of them. When Saeris protests that her oath was only to help with quicksilver and relics, Kingfisher recites the exact wording: he would try to retrieve Hayden, and Saeris would assist him “in any way” he asked and “do as you’re told.” He bluntly explains that in Fae bargains, what Saeris intended does not matter—only the “fine print”—and warns they must leave before Belikon discovers what is happening.
Outside, Saeris is overwhelmed by the reality of Yvelia: snow falling freely and stars visible through breaks in cloud, a stark contrast to Zilvaren’s heat and constant thirst. Kingfisher explains that quicksilver can close distances between realms and reach worlds that orbit those distant suns, making Saeris realize her home exists among the stars rather than behind a mere hidden door.
Kingfisher gives Saeris a heavy, fur-lined cloak, hoists her onto a chestnut horse he calls Aida, and secures the long bundle beneath her saddle while ordering her not to touch it. Saeris demands her bag because Onyx is inside; Kingfisher returns it with a threat to skin the “rodent,” while Saeris insists Onyx is not cargo. Carrion remains lashed unconscious to Kingfisher’s horse; although Kingfisher suggests leaving him behind, Saeris refuses, believing Belikon will kill Carrion once he realizes Saeris has been taken. Kingfisher coldly reframes it as voluntary, then rides on, forcing Saeris to come with him under the oath.
