Sciona Freynan begins her High Magistry examination in Leon’s Hall determined to prove that a woman can belong among Tiran’s highest mages. After introducing her background at public school, Danworth Academy, and Archmage Bringham’s laboratory, she settles once her hands reach the spellograph. Sciona handles Archmage Scywin’s prompt by using the Kaedor mapping method to ignite pine twigs with precise, controlled fire, then impresses the panel again when Bringham asks her to bisect an obsidian slab and she cuts it into two perfectly equal halves.

The prompts become more difficult and more revealing of the archmages’ attitudes toward her. Archmage Duris gives her an alchemical task that does not match her specialty, clearly trying to unsettle her, but Sciona works around her lack of formal alchemical training by siphoning matter from the Otherrealm, extracting carbon, and designing a conditional energy-based incendiary device that ignites only after being thrown fifteen feet into the air. As the examination continues, Sciona keeps succeeding, and her confidence grows because she realizes she has not truly failed any prompt.

For the final challenge, Duris produces a massive industrial cauldron and orders Sciona to levitate it without drawing from the Reserve. Because Sciona cannot accurately determine the cauldron’s weight, she chooses to err on the side of excessive power rather than fail quietly. She uses her own heavily modified mapping system, a method she hopes one day to publish under her own name, and siphons from multiple energy sources at once. The result is disastrous: the cauldron rockets into the ceiling, smashes murals and stonework, and crashes back down, leaving Leon’s Hall damaged and Sciona certain she has ruined everything.

When Sciona realizes from the damage that she has overestimated the cauldron’s weight, she immediately rewrites the spell with corrected values. Even though Duris orders her to stop and threatens disqualification, Sciona finishes the spell and demonstrates perfect control by suspending the cauldron motionless in the air. Only after that success does the emotional cost hit her. Convinced that defying an archmage has ended her chance and harmed the cause of all female mages, Sciona flees to the lavatory, where Alba comforts her through panic, vomiting, and despair over the forgotten and broken histories of other talented women.

Bringham then finds Sciona and reveals that she has passed: Archmage Duris could not disqualify her, and the Council accepted her after seeing the scale of her talent. Bringham admits he deliberately encouraged the cauldron prompt so the Council would witness her power, then privately tells her that Tiran has approved a secret barrier expansion and that her new role as Highmage Freynan will involve developing new sourcing and mapping solutions for it. The chapter ends with Sciona overwhelmed but exhilarated, imagining herself not only as the first woman in the High Magistry but as the mage who could change Tiran’s future.
