Chapter 5: Just a Drink
Overview
Sciona spends the day teaching Tommy the fundamentals behind her barrier work, and his sharp questions force her to confront both the stakes of magical negligence and the way Kwen deaths are dismissed in Tiran. After the other highmages exclude her, Tommy becomes her only source of respect and companionship, leading to a socially transgressive night of drinking together. Their conversation deepens into mutual honesty about power, loss, and ambition, and Tommy finally reveals his true name, marking a significant shift in their relationship.
Summary
Sciona abruptly decides not to waste her first day merely unpacking and instead starts training Tommy as a real assistant. To bring him up to speed quickly, she explains the barrier-expansion project, the urgency created by Tiran’s overcrowding, and the magical basics behind sourcing energy from the Otherrealm. She walks him through mapping, spell composition, and the difference between Reserve energy and manual siphoning, trying to translate complex magical theory into practical metaphors he can understand.
As Sciona demonstrates a simple action spell on her spellograph, Tommy proves unexpectedly perceptive. His questions push her to explain why manual siphoning matters, why energy limits can be dangerous, and how magical mistakes can become deadly. When Tommy mentions that two of his Kwen neighbors died in the West Bend bridge collapse, Sciona realizes the papers ignored those deaths because the victims were Kwen. The exchange sharpens her sense that responsible magic matters, and she insists that she intends to do better work than the men whose negligence caused such harm.
Later, when the male highmages invite Jerrin Mordra out for a first-day drink but pointedly exclude Sciona, the day’s buried humiliation resurfaces. She decides to remain overnight in her laboratory to save commuting time, and Tommy becomes the only person at the university besides Bringham to address her as “Highmage.” When Tommy awkwardly offers to buy her a drink because someone should, Sciona first resists the social impropriety, then accepts by reframing it as each of them drinking to the other’s promotion.
At the Dancing Wolf, a Kwen-owned bar, Sciona removes her white robe so she can avoid attention and settles into a space where she blends in. Tommy tells the bartender, Raehem, that Sciona is Tiran’s first female highmage, earning her free drinks and quiet admiration rather than ridicule. Over several rounds, Tommy asks why Sciona fought so hard for a role that brings hostility, and Sciona admits that her drive is less about love than power: magic is the one field where intellect lets her escape the usual limits placed on women. Tommy, in turn, reveals that he also lost his parents young and was raised with the help of his older sister, giving them a rare moment of mutual understanding.
As the drinking continues, Sciona grows very drunk and tries to show Tommy one of her self-made magical conduits, revealing that she routinely carries dangerous devices on her belt. Tommy calmly prevents her from setting one off and insists on escorting her back because the streets are unsafe. On the walk home, Sciona asks him to stop calling her “ma’am,” and Tommy asks her to stop using the Tiranized “Tommy,” revealing his true name: Thomil Siernes-Caldonn. The chapter ends with Thomil getting Sciona safely back to her laboratory, sealing a new bond built on trust, candor, and a shared crossing of social boundaries.
