CHAPTER FORTY-NINE
Overview
Xaden and Violet consummate their reunion with intense, emotionally charged intimacy, during which Violet's lightning accidentally ignites their desk and Xaden's shadows flood the room at climax. Crucially, Xaden leaves no damage on the wooden furniture—a meaningful sign that his venin corruption remains under control. An appended letter reveals Xaden has officially declined the king's troop request and claimed command of all Tyrrish military citizens as Duke of Tyrrendor.
Summary
Xaden and Violet's reunion becomes fully intimate as they give in to their desire. After passionate kissing against the stone wall, Xaden carries Violet to the high-backed armchair rather than the bed. He uses his shadows to hold her hands to the chairback while he lifts her hips to his mouth, bringing her to a powerful orgasm that triggers a lightning strike outside. He extends her climax with his fingers before repositioning behind her in the chair.
Xaden offers Violet a last chance to change her mind and reminds her of the dagger on the dresser, but she silences him with a kiss. He enters her from behind while she grips the chair, establishing a deep, intense rhythm. Their combined power charges the air, and when Violet climaxes again, her lightning strikes repeatedly—accidentally setting the desk on fire, which Xaden's shadows quickly extinguish.
Xaden then repositions Violet to straddle his lap, but this time he grips the dresser's edge for self-control, visibly struggling to maintain restraint. Violet encourages him to let go, assuring him he won't hurt her, calling on just enough power to hum along her skin as proof she isn't defenseless, and pushing her pleasure down their bond. Xaden's release comes with shadows flooding the room and metal objects clattering to the ground.
In the aftermath, Violet checks the wooden furniture for damage—a test of whether Xaden's venin-tainted power destructively manifested. There isn't a single mark, confirming his stability. Xaden acknowledges the victory cautiously, saying he'll take it "for now," and his eyes light up with hope. He carries Violet toward the bathtub, planning to continue their night together across multiple locations in their room. The chapter closes with an official letter in which Xaden, as Duke of Tyrrendor, formally declines King Tauri's request for provincial troops and asserts command over all Tyrrish military citizens after resigning from Basgiath.
