CHAPTER FOUR
Overview
Xaden resolves to avoid losing control around Violet after inadvertently channeling energy, while the fragile Poromish negotiations threaten to collapse over flier safety and Tyrrish tensions. Mira returns with a critical breakthrough—a method to nullify individual wardstone runes, potentially allowing fliers to stay at Basgiath safely—but also delivers devastating news that Aretia's wards have only six months before total collapse. The Sorrengail siblings clash over Violet's dangerous mission to find the seventh dragon breed, and Brennan is urged to present the rune-nullification plan to the Senarium despite near-certain resistance.
Summary
The chapter opens with Violet and Xaden processing what just happened—Xaden inadvertently channeled energy from the headboard while intimate. Violet inspects his eyes and finds no red, confirming he stopped in time. Xaden resolves that they must avoid situations where he could lose control, acknowledging the danger his venin nature poses to Violet. They discuss the mysterious thought-sharing ability they've experienced, with Xaden recalling the first time he deliberately shared a memory with her during their time as cadets. Despite the gravity of the moment, they shift into a lighter tone and begin getting dressed.
As they prepare for the day, Violet notes Xaden was out late, likely dealing with Duke Lindell and the Tyrrish nobility present at Basgiath. She warns him that Melgren could exploit the chaos to eliminate the Tyrrish aristocracy. Xaden reveals that negotiations over the riot's continued presence, flier safety, and Poromish relations remain fragile—any incident could cause Poromiel to walk away from the table. He mentions that two of the third-year fliers clashed with First Wing riders the previous night. Violet observes that Aretia alone could offer Poromiel what it needs, but Xaden counters that Aretia's wards are faltering and Tyrrendor's last secession attempt ended badly.
Their conversation is interrupted when Brennan, Garrick, Lewellen, Bodhi, Imogen, and eventually Mira all crowd the hallway outside Violet's room. Brennan needs Xaden for a meeting, and Xaden departs with Brennan, Lewellen, and Garrick. Violet privately realizes that Bodhi, Garrick, and Imogen were there not for negotiations but to check that Xaden hadn't harmed her in the night—a sobering reminder of their fears about his venin nature.
Mira arrives early from her mission, bringing a replacement conduit from Felix and, crucially, a runed practice disk demonstrating a breakthrough: Trissa and an agrarian flier named Kylynn have figured out how to nullify individual runes on wardstones without destroying the others. This means they could potentially disable the wardstone's kill rune that targets fliers, allowing fliers to safely remain at Basgiath. This discovery could save the Poromish negotiations and fulfill Violet's deal with Tecarus. Imogen warns that the Senarium likely won't agree, and Mira urges secrecy to protect everyone from treason charges.
After the others leave, Brennan returns and updates them on the stalled negotiations. Mira confronts Brennan about allowing Violet's mission to find Andarna's breed, then delivers devastating news: based on her evaluation of the wards, Aretia has roughly six months before total ward collapse. This drastically shortens the timeline for everything. Tairn privately warns Violet that the seventh breed, if they chose to hide, will not welcome intrusion, and the mission could kill them. Brennan and Mira argue bitterly, with Mira accusing Brennan of sacrificing family members for the greater good—just like their mother. In anger, she throws the runed disk at Brennan and tells him to take the rune-nullification plan to the Senarium. Brennan fears they'll never agree, but Violet insists it's the only path to forging the alliance.
