Chapter 13
Overview
At Sue’s funeral, Percy’s guilt over sleeping with Sam collides with the sight of Taylor still firmly in Sam’s orbit, and Sam’s eulogy about lasting love deepens Percy’s sense that she does not belong in his life. At the wake, Percy overhears Sam’s friends warn him how badly she hurt him before, which sends her into a panic attack. Her admission that the attacks began twelve years earlier exposes how long she has been carrying unresolved damage and pushes Charlie and Sam closer to the truth behind her disappearance.
Summary
On the morning of Sue’s funeral, Percy spirals over what happened with Sam in the truck. She starts and deletes a message to Chantal, then finally sends one, but gets no reply. In the shower, Percy berates herself for sleeping with Sam when he is newly single and grieving, and she fears she has ruined any chance of staying in his life.
At the church, Percy finds Sam with his family and with Taylor, whose closeness to Sam immediately unsettles her. Charlie introduces Percy to relatives, including Julien and family members from both sides. Percy notices how adult and composed Sam looks in his suit, and when she hugs him, the moment feels both intimate and final, especially with Taylor standing beside him.
During the service, Charlie delivers an earnest eulogy about Sue holding the family and business together after his father died. Sam then surprises Percy by speaking. His eulogy is warm and lightly funny at first, but it turns deeply emotional when he describes Sue’s long love story with his father and says some people are lucky enough to know their best friend and never let go. Percy is deeply affected, but when Taylor takes Sam’s hand afterward, Percy concludes that Sam and Taylor make sense together and that coming back to Barry’s Bay was a mistake.
At the wake at the Tavern, Percy feels like an outsider among Sue’s relatives and friends. Looking for a quiet task, she heads toward the kitchen and accidentally overhears Sam speaking with his friends Jordie and Finn. They warn Sam against getting involved with Percy again and remind him how badly he suffered the last time, which confirms for Percy how much damage she caused.
The overheard conversation triggers a panic attack. Charlie finds Percy struggling to breathe, and Sam takes over, crouching beside her and calmly counting until she can match her breathing to his rhythm. Once Percy recovers, Sam introduces Jordie and Finn, and Charlie realizes this is not her first episode. When Sam asks when the panic attacks began, Percy answers that they started about twelve years ago, revealing that her long-buried distress reaches back to the aftermath of what happened between them.
