Chapter 15
Overview
After a panic attack at Sue's wake, Percy confides in Chantal, who forces her to face how deeply Sam still matters to her and pushes her toward honesty. Back at the Florek house, Charlie's anger about Taylor exposes that Sam is repeating a painful pattern, but Sam tells Percy he ended that relationship because he never got over her. Their reunion becomes both emotional and physical as they finally sleep together, yet the chapter ends with Percy still needing to reveal why she once pushed him away.
Summary
After fleeing to her car to recover from a panic attack at Sue's wake, Percy finally answers Chantal's calls. Chantal immediately understands that seeing Sam again and mourning Sue have reopened old wounds, and she bluntly tells Percy that she has spent years keeping other people at a distance. When Percy tells Chantal everything, Chantal asks whether Percy will tell Sam the full truth and reminds her that she has never truly moved on.
When Percy returns inside, most of the guests are gone, so she helps Julien clean up. During their quiet work, Julien makes it clear that people had wanted Percy to come and warns her not to disappear again. Sam and Charlie join them, thank Julien and Percy for helping, and, because the brothers have been drinking, Julien tells Percy to drive them home.
On the drive and back at the Florek house, the mood briefly lightens. Percy admits to Sam and Charlie that she struggles with anxiety and panic attacks, and she is surprised by how easy it feels to be honest with them. But when Percy asks about Taylor, Charlie suddenly lashes out at Sam, accusing him of repeating old behavior and calling him a coward before storming off, leaving Percy unsettled and Sam insisting that Charlie is wrong about him.
Sam brings Percy to his old bedroom so she can change into dry clothes after spilling beer on herself. Surrounded by the objects of their past, they slip into familiar teasing, then into a more serious conversation. Sam tells Percy that he no longer takes people or time for granted, admits that ending things with Taylor was connected to Percy, and confesses that he has tried to forget Percy for more than ten years and does not want to try anymore.
Percy starts to explain that she loved Sam even when she rejected his proposal years earlier, and she asks about the damage that breakup caused him. Sam downplays his spiral into drinking and partying, but Percy still feels she owes him the truth and says she is not good enough for him. Sam begs Percy not to shut him out again, Percy admits she wants him too, and they finally make love. Afterward, as they lie together on the floor, Sam tells Percy that he loves her and does not think he ever stopped, while Percy reaches the brink of finally saying what she could not say twelve years before.
