Old Ghosts: LONDON, OCTOBER 31, 1902
Overview
Isobel confronts Marco in London after leaving the circus, offering an apology and a painful accounting of how she misread her place in the struggle between Marco and Celia. Marco admits he never loved Isobel, and Isobel suggests a potential “saving” chance existed but has passed due to timing. The meeting ends violently when Isobel uses black ash-like crystals on Marco, leaving only his briefcase behind as she departs with it.
Summary
Late on Halloween night in London, Isobel waits outside the building that was once her home, hoping to speak with Marco. When Marco arrives, tense and guarded, Isobel explains that she left the circus—Celia allowed her to go—and asks to talk, but Marco refuses to let her upstairs.
On the empty street, Isobel apologizes for not admitting that she was tempering and for her role in the harm done last year. She says she already apologized to Celia and admits she misunderstood Celia’s love, thinking it was for Friedrich Thiessen, only realizing too late that Celia loved Marco. Isobel confesses she tried to protect Marco from Celia and later tried to protect everyone from both of them, driven in part by what she saw when she read Celia’s cards.
Isobel speaks bitterly about time and missed chances, concluding she was never central to what was happening between Marco and Celia. When Isobel asks if Marco ever loved her, Marco admits he did not. Isobel accepts it, acknowledging she confused what she wanted with what was real, and Marco tells her that without Celia he would be nothing.
Isobel then reveals she recently read the cards for a young man whose reading contained “everything,” like reading for the circus, and she believed he could have saved Marco. She says Marco had a chance for a happier resolution with Celia, but that the timing is no longer right.
Isobel produces sparkling black crystals, like ash, and blows them into Marco’s face in a stinging cloud. When the dust clears, Marco is gone, with only his briefcase left on the pavement; Isobel takes the briefcase and walks away.
