Overview
Poppet visits a deteriorating Chandresh in London and persuades him to sign ownership of Le Cirque des Rêves over to Mr. Clarke, formalizing new stewardship for the circus. She then helps Chandresh realize Ethan’s scattered blueprints are not renovations but a coherent plan for a new museum, and their collaboration rekindles his focus. Poppet honors Celia and Marco’s choice to be together by dedicating a room to them and leaves Chandresh with a kitten and a clearer, forward-looking life.
Summary
Poppet Murray arrives at la maison Lefèvre in London with a briefcase and a satchel, repeatedly ringing and knocking until Chandresh Lefèvre finally answers. The house is cluttered and neglected, with the staff dismissed except for the cooks, and Chandresh appears disheveled and distracted amid scattered papers and empty brandy bottles.
In Chandresh’s study, Poppet explains her purpose: she wants Chandresh to sign over ownership of Le Cirque des Rêves. She presents a contract listing Ethan and Lainie, noting that Madame Padva has stepped away and trusts Miss Burgess to manage what she once did; she also names “Mr. Clarke” as the person who will care for the circus. Chandresh reads the document, then signs, and Poppet secures the contract.
Poppet then asks about the blueprints filling the room. Chandresh says Ethan gave him plans intended as house renovations, but they do not fit together. Studying them, Poppet recognizes a different structure entirely and explains that the plans are for a new building: a museum. She begins rearranging the pages into a coherent order, laying alternate doorways and rooms together so the layout makes sense.
Chandresh joins in, energized by the emerging design as they build an imaginative museum from the fragments. He nearly calls for Marco before remembering Marco left without returning; Poppet tells Chandresh Marco’s departure was unplanned and that Marco left to be with Celia Bowen. Delighted for them, Chandresh chooses to honor the pair by dedicating a serene, round room lit through a koi pond above it, writing their names on the plan.
Poppet offers to stay in London and help Chandresh find a new assistant. She then presents a gift from her satchel: a black-and-white kitten named Ara to keep Chandresh company. Poppet privately notes she will not restore Chandresh’s memory, believing he is better served looking forward; after she kisses his cheek, Chandresh feels a lingering fog lift and his mind clears. The two spend hours refining the museum blueprints while Ara plays among the curling pages.
