Chapter 39
Overview
Ford and Rosie attend a glamorous fundraiser where Ford publicly calls Rosie his girlfriend, but the night unravels when Rosie discovers Ford has been spending tens of millions buying buildings to ruin Stan's company—and that he told West her secret. West's arrest in Vancouver forces a reckoning about privilege, trust, and loyalty that nearly breaks them apart. After raw confrontations and heartfelt apologies, Rosie forgives Ford, accepts co-ownership of the newly renamed Wild Rose Records, Cora calls Ford 'Dad' for the first time, and Ford proposes—sealing a relationship built on wild, imperfect love.
Summary
The chapter opens with Rosie at the office refusing to sand the paint-stained floor, bantering with Ford about obedience and their upcoming trip. Ford reveals they'll fly on his private jet to an Emerald Lake fundraiser for wildfire recovery, and Rosie teases him about his wealth while they flirt openly at the office. West visits to check shirt sizes for the bowling team, and Rosie covers for the paint mess by calling it 'modern art,' which West accepts. On the private jet, Ford nervously texts about Cora, who is staying with his parents, while Rosie admires her expensive designer dress and the luxurious trip Ford has arranged.
At the fundraiser, Ford introduces Rosie as his girlfriend to the press and throughout the event, despite her initial shock at the label. While Ford grows disillusioned by the fake atmosphere of wealthy lobbyists, Rosie works the room with genuine charm. Rosie encounters Faye, a former colleague from Apex, who reveals that Stan Cumberland's company has been in freefall—repeatedly evicted from offices in mysterious circumstances. Rosie quickly deduces that Ford is behind the evictions and confronts him privately at their hotel. Ford admits he's been buying Vancouver commercial real estate worth tens of millions per building to systematically destroy Stan's business as revenge for what Stan did to Rosie. He declares Rosie is worth every penny and passionately affirms his love, leading to an intense, emotional sexual encounter where Rosie tells Ford she loves him for the first time.
The next morning, Ford's lawyer calls to say West has been arrested in Vancouver after a confrontation with Stan. Ford tells Rosie, who is furious—not only did Ford share her secret about Stan with West, but he involved her brother in his revenge scheme, putting West at legal risk. Rosie delivers a powerful speech about Ford's privilege and how he used West as a pawn, demanding Ford make things right. She declares she quits and leaves separately for Calgary while Ford heads to Vancouver. At the police station, Ford finds West cheerfully socializing with officers; security footage proves Stan attacked West first, so West faces no charges and is instead pressing charges against Stan. Ford confronts Stan directly at the station, warning him about consequences.
On the drive home, Ford and West have a heart-to-heart. West explains his marriage to Mia failed because they weren't on the same team, and Ford recognizes that Rosie must come first. Meanwhile, Gemma Grant picks Rosie up and shares wisdom about protecting a partner's privacy. Back in Rose Hill, Rosie picks up West's kids, and later discovers Ford has deeded her the dock—along with a strip of his property—and named it 'Rosie's Dock.' At the lake, Ford apologizes from the water, and Rosie jumps in, telling him she doesn't want a safe love but a 'wild love.' She forgives him but asks for one night of space. At midnight, Ford arrives at her door, apologizes again, and offers her half of Rose Hill Records as a business partner. Rosie accepts.
The next day at Cora's end-of-school party, Cora casually calls Ford 'Dad' for the first time, and Marilyn tells Ford she plans to move to Rose Hill permanently. Ford takes the kids tubing. Later, Rosie reveals she's mounted a gold plaque on the paint stain reading 'Wild Love — Paint on lumber — By Rosalie Belmont and Ford Grant,' and they spend the evening on the couch listening to music. In the epilogue set a month later, Ford and Rosie are living together. Cora and Ford bond over music sessions. Ford proposes by recreating the Ouija board prank with Cora's help—cutting the lights during Bloody Mary—and presenting a pink ring. Rosie playfully runs, Ford chases her to the dock, and she says yes. He also reveals the studio will be renamed Wild Rose Records.
