Summary
The chapter opens with a playful email exchange between Rosie and Ford at the office, continuing their Harry Potter–themed banter. Ford steps outside to photograph the barn-office for a designer, envisioning the recording studio as an artistic retreat with mountain cottages. When the office phone rings, Rosie answers and finds herself speaking with Ford Grant Senior. She deftly deflects his concerns about his son, defending Ford while teasing Senior with her characteristic lack of boundaries. After hanging up, Rosie tells Ford he owes her one, explaining that sometimes people need time before having big conversations. She then tears a page from her childhood diary and places it on Ford's desk, saying she owed him one. The entry recalls a time teenage Rosie failed an exam she'd hidden from her parents, and Ford—rather than mocking her—had quietly helped by not exposing her secret. Ford reflects that he never thought she was dumb and knew about her mother's forged signature. Rosie reveals she retook the exam and passed, keeping it as their shared secret.
Ford accompanies West to a bowling league night called "Dads' Night Out" at Rose Valley Alley, leaving Cora in Rosie's care. At the alley, Ford meets his new teammates: the gruff contractor Bash, the conspiracy-theorist mountain hermit Crazy Clyde, and their rival team captain "Too Tall." Ford's competitive instincts are ignited by Too Tall's arrogance, and despite losing the match, Ford genuinely enjoys himself. Meanwhile, Rosie and Cora bond over pizza, root beer floats, and Legally Blonde. Cora confides her desire to reinvent herself, and Rosie encourages her to wear pink if she wants, telling her she's beautiful. Cora probes Rosie about whether she'll return to the city. Rosie admits Rose Hill feels like home and acknowledges that her relationship with Ryan has run its course—she plans to break up with him in person. Cora also reveals that Ford accompanied Rosie to school pickup not to learn the routine, but because Cora told him about the "perv dads" watching Rosie.
When Ford returns from bowling, he finds Rosie asleep on his couch. He wakes her gently, and an electric moment passes between them as she stands between his knees. His hands grip her thighs briefly, and both are frozen by the intensity before Rosie pulls away. She goes upstairs to check on Cora and leaves her pink scrunchie on the girl's bedside table. Ford catches her watching Cora sleep, and his expression softens with longing. He insists on walking Rosie home, and they stop on the dock by the lake, where they share a quiet conversation about missing the wild, uncivilized beauty of Rose Hill and how city life changes a person.
When Ford mentions formalizing her employment with references, Rosie's anxiety spikes. She finally confesses to Ford that she was fired after her boss Stan sexually assaulted her with wandering hands, that she reported it but the company sided with her boss. Tears fall as she also admits to being exhausted—from her failing relationship with Ryan, her student debt, her guilt about running away, and the weight of pretending everything is fine. Ford pulls her into a fierce embrace, telling her to rest and that he's "got her." He privately vows to ruin Stan and the company. Rosie asks him not to tell anyone, and he walks her to her door. She sleeps deeply for the first time, relieved to have shared her burden.
The next morning, Ford drops Cora at school and notices her wearing Rosie's pink scrunchie in her braid—a meaningful gesture. At the office, he finds another torn diary page from Rosie with a Post-it reading "Thanks for last night. You owed me one anyway." The entry, from when Rosie was seventeen, references Ford in a way that suggests her feelings for him have always been more complicated than animosity. Ford shoves his own feelings down and calls his mother Gemma to finally tell his parents about Cora. His mother reacts with humor and warmth, promising to visit during their summer stay in Rose Hill. Ford opens up about Cora enthusiastically. The chapter closes with an email from Rosie proposing a branded sweatsuit for Rose Hill Records merchandising, demonstrating her initiative and growing investment in the business.
