Chapter Thirteen
Overview
Tanner investigates his possible connection to Jasper through Sheriff Charlie Donley, who confirms Jasper had a son named David and shares the tragic history of Jasper's family. Tanner enlists Kaitlyn to ask Jasper about David's girlfriend Monica Hughes, and when Jasper confirms the name, Kaitlyn reveals that Tanner is David and Monica's son—Jasper's grandson. Overcome with emotion, Jasper agrees to meet Tanner, marking a pivotal reunion between grandfather and grandchild.
Summary
Tanner returns to his hotel after the hospital visit, unable to sleep as he reflects on whether Jasper might be his grandfather and whether Kaitlyn might give him a second chance. He recognizes that what happens next with Kaitlyn is her decision, not his, and the loss of control leaves him agitated through the night.
On Monday morning, Kaitlyn visits Jasper at the hospital. Jasper tells her about his encounters with the Littleton boys, who hunted illegally and abandoned him in the forest. Before Kaitlyn can raise the topic of Jasper's sons, Dr. Betters and the orthopedic surgeon enter the room, so she postpones that conversation. Meanwhile, Tanner visits Sheriff Charlie Donley and shares his background, his search for his biological father's family, and Jasper's last name. Charlie confirms he knows Jasper, is shocked when Tanner asks about a son named David, and tells Tanner the full, tragic story of Jasper's family—including a devastating fire. Tanner then files a request for David Johnson's birth certificate at the county office. The chronology of David's age aligns roughly with Tanner's mother's age, strengthening his theory.
Tanner texts Kaitlyn asking to meet, explaining he believes Jasper's son David may have been his biological father. Kaitlyn initially sees only a partial preview and dismisses it, but reads the full message at lunch and agrees to meet him at her office at 5:30—on professional terms, not personal. At the meeting, Tanner lays out what the sheriff told him and his reluctance to burden Jasper. They agree the decision to meet should be Jasper's. Tanner proposes a plan: Kaitlyn asks Jasper a single question that could confirm the connection without revealing Tanner's existence unless Jasper wants to know.
That evening, Kaitlyn visits Jasper at the hospital. After chatting about his recovery, Arlo, the Littletons, and Casey's confrontation with Josh, Kaitlyn gently broaches the subject of Jasper's son David. She asks whether David ever had a girlfriend named Monica Hughes. Jasper is jolted by the name and confirms David loved Monica, but she moved away when her military father was posted to Europe, and David never heard from her again. Kaitlyn reveals that Monica was pregnant when she left and died during childbirth, but the baby—a boy named Tanner Hughes—survived. She tells Jasper that Tanner is the man who found him in the woods.
Overwhelmed with emotion, Jasper weeps as the revelation sinks in: he has a living grandchild. Kaitlyn relays Tanner's message that meeting is entirely Jasper's choice, and that Tanner will respect whatever he decides. After a long, tearful silence, Jasper says he would very much like to meet his family.
