Epilogue
Overview
In the epilogue, Tanner commits to caring for Jasper and decides to stay in Asheboro permanently, forgoing his return to Cameroon after Jasper's stories about family transform his outlook. Kaitlyn and Tanner tentatively reconcile, agreeing to start over, while Jasper—now confirmed as Tanner's grandfather—finds spiritual peace at last, interpreting the reappearance of the white deer as a sign that God has blessed him with a new family after decades of loss.
Summary
The epilogue opens with Tanner settling into a daily caregiving routine for Jasper, bringing breakfast, helping him dress, and wheeling him around the cabin. Jasper's health remains fragile—his prolonged exposure in the forest triggered a severe autoimmune response, leaving his psoriasis inflamed and his right hand badly swollen. Despite this, Jasper never complains. Tanner recalls their first meeting in the hospital, where Jasper greeted him warmly and didn't want to let go of his hand. During that initial visit, Tanner shared his entire life story, and when he mentioned Kaitlyn, Jasper saw through him immediately, telling him plainly, "You love her. You should tell her how you feel."
Over the following days, Tanner stays close—waiting during Jasper's surgery, renting a wheelchair, ordering construction supplies, and building a ramp at the cabin. While Tanner works, Jasper tells him his own story: his family, his wife Audrey, his children, and especially David, Tanner's father. Tanner studies old family photos and is stunned by his resemblance to David. Jasper eventually recounts the tragedies—the tornado, the fire, Paul's suicide, the burn ward—but also speaks of recent joys: carving with Mitch, the white deer sighting, and Tanner's miraculous appearance in his life. Tanner visits the family cemetery with Jasper, who confesses he once wished he had died with his family, but reflects that his broken heart is proof of the love he once had. A DNA test confirms they are grandfather and grandson.
On Saturday, Kaitlyn brings Mitch and Casey to the cabin for a medical check on Jasper. While Kaitlyn examines Jasper inside, the children bond with Tanner outside as he finishes the railing. Jasper tells Kaitlyn directly that Tanner loves her and urges her not to let him go, hinting that Tanner may not be leaving after all. When Kaitlyn steps outside and speaks with Tanner, she learns he has already emailed his employer to say he won't return to Cameroon. Tanner explains that Jasper's stories about family have changed him, and he plans to stay in Asheboro—for Jasper, and possibly for good. Kaitlyn, cautiously hopeful, asks him to come along to look at Broncos with Casey, and Tanner kisses her before they leave together with the kids.
Left alone, Jasper reflects on how obvious it was that Tanner and Kaitlyn needed only a gentle push. He opens his Bible to the Book of Job, a story he had avoided for years because it mirrored his own suffering. Rereading it, he is struck by the ending he had forgotten—God's restoration of Job's blessings. Looking up, he sees the white deer standing at the edge of his property near the family gravesite. Overwhelmed, Jasper interprets the deer's appearance as a divine sign that God never abandoned him, and that Tanner's arrival is his own restoration, just as Job received a new family after losing everything. As the deer vanishes into the Uwharrie, Jasper weeps with peace and whispers a prayer of thanks.
