Overview
Martha catches Jonathan and Sally Pierce in a secret embrace near Mill Creek Bridge and is alarmed by both the risk they are taking and the girl involved. When Martha later confronts Jonathan, he admits he has no intention of marrying Sally and only wants pleasure without responsibility. The chapter exposes Jonathan's selfishness, Sally's vulnerability, and the growing distance between Martha and her adult son.
Summary
While traveling near Mill Creek Bridge on Tuesday, January 26, Martha unexpectedly comes upon Sally Pierce and Jonathan Ballard in a passionate embrace beside a wagon hidden under pine trees. Martha is struck not only by their behavior but by the risky, visible place they have chosen. Remembering Sally's accusations against the Fosters and the trouble that followed, Martha decides not to spare either of them the embarrassment of being discovered.
Martha speaks, forcing the couple apart. Sally is immediately ashamed and frightened, while Jonathan reacts with anger at being caught by his mother. Jonathan hastily claims that Sally had been helping Hannah with a quilt and that he was merely escorting Sally home. Martha does not believe the excuse and pointedly tells Jonathan to take Sally the rest of the way before her father is upset. As they leave, Martha warns Jonathan that they will discuss the matter later.
Afterward, Martha waits for Jonathan in the barn so he cannot avoid her. She directly asks whether he intends to marry Sally. Jonathan answers no, saying he has no desire for marriage, children, or the responsibilities that come with them, because he prefers his current freedom.
Martha responds that if Jonathan has no intention of marrying Sally, he must leave Sally alone. When Jonathan dismisses the encounter as harmless fun, Martha rejects that excuse. Martha has seen Sally's face and understands that Sally believes Jonathan means more than a casual flirtation. The confrontation leaves the issue unresolved, but it makes clear that Jonathan's recklessness could damage Sally and deepen the strain between mother and son.
