Summary
- The Marquis arrives in a small village where he serves as lord and where the people live in poverty and are exploited
- The Marquis encounters a road-mender whose fixed stare bothers him, and the road-mender tells him someone was holding onto the bottom of the carriage
- The Marquis comes across a peasant woman mourning at a graveside and asks for a stone or marker for her husband's grave, but the Marquis ignores her and drives away
- The Marquis arrives at his chateau and asks if Monsieur Charles has arrived from England
