Chapter 17
Overview
Molly, taken to court in pajamas, faces a bail hearing where Detective Stark questions her integrity and ties to Charles Black. A disengaged young attorney offers minimal advocacy. The judge, noting Charlotte Preston’s backing and Molly’s stability, dismisses insinuations and grants conditional bail, restoring Molly’s limited freedom.
Summary
Molly is escorted to the courthouse in the afternoon, still in pajamas, and waits in a cramped office with a very young attorney who treats the hearing as routine and asks perfunctory questions about her record and flight risk.
They enter the courtroom, where Molly notes Detective Stark’s presence. Stark presents the case and implies that Molly and the Regency Grand conceal wrongdoing, suggesting Molly’s connection to Charles Black reflects poor integrity. The judge rebukes Stark for straying from the point.
The young attorney argues Molly’s clean record, stable address, and low flight risk. When the judge asks who is posting bail, he notes Charlotte Preston by name. Molly apologizes for her attire and, speaking for herself, emphasizes her rule-following nature and limited life routine.
The judge outlines movement restrictions and, unimpressed by Stark’s insinuations, grants Molly conditional bail. Stark avoids the judge’s gaze as Molly regains freedom under conditions of home, work, and city limits.
