41. Monday Night
Overview
On the night Beth begins her affair with Gabriel, Frank reveals that he noticed her charged look toward Gabriel at the wedding. Beth successfully deflects his suspicion, but the exchange exposes Frank’s jealousy and Beth’s new ability to deceive him. Their intimacy resumes, underscoring how her marriage and affair are now running side by side toward an inevitable conflict.
Summary
Late that night in bed, Frank suddenly tells Beth, "I saw you," jolting Beth into panic because she has just begun her affair with Gabriel. Beth turns on the lamp and carefully asks what Frank means, trying to sound calm despite fearing he has discovered her infidelity.
Frank explains that he saw Beth with Gabriel at the wedding, before the speeches, when Leo was also there. Beth immediately minimizes the encounter and pretends not to understand his accusation, forcing Frank to say plainly that he saw the way Beth looked at Gabriel. Beth realizes she can lie to Frank with unsettling ease, even though they once understood each other almost wordlessly.
Frank half-jokes that he sounds like a jealous freak, and Beth answers by turning the moment affectionate, calling him her jealous freak. Their argument dissolves into reassurance and kissing, restoring the surface of their marriage for the moment. Beth registers that kissing Frank after kissing Gabriel does not even feel wrong to her, and she ends the chapter refusing to think about where this divided love story will lead.
