On Monday, the farm seems outwardly normal after Jimmy and Nina’s wedding, but Beth feels internally transformed and trapped in obsessive thoughts. With Frank out working on the farm and Nina at the Compasses, Beth acts on impulse and drives to Meadowlands, unable to resist seeing Gabriel.

When Gabriel opens the door, both Beth and Gabriel immediately show the same mix of relief, fear, and longing. Gabriel tells Beth that he loves her and never stopped, and they give in to the desire and history between them. In the library, their physical reunion feels to Beth like a return to the past and the fulfillment of months of suppressed longing.

Afterward, the intensity gives way to shock and grief. Beth is overwhelmed by the cost of what they have done and breaks down, thinking of Frank and fearing that she will lose him. Gabriel tries to comfort Beth by saying no one needs to know and that the affair does not have to happen again, even as both of them admit that they want it to.

As they dress, Gabriel asks whether they might carefully keep seeing each other for a little while, arguing that what he and Beth once had was rare and that they had thrown it away. Even so, she consciously chooses the risk and steps fully into a secret love affair with Gabriel.
