Chapter 24
Overview
After Gary disappears following the canceled wedding, Phoebe tracks him down and their conversation finally clarifies why his relationship with Lila failed: he mistook gratitude, passivity, and the performance of normal life for love. Gary also reveals that he sensed the truth earlier but did not trust himself enough to act.
At the same time, Phoebe realizes she must return to St. Louis to close out her old life before starting Geoffrey's job. She leaves the inn newly certain that this apparent ending is actually the start of her next chapter.
Summary
The morning after the wedding is canceled, Marla refuses to leave the conservatory until Gary appears and unapologetically eats the abandoned wedding brunch. Gary's family gathers without him, telling old stories from his childhood while Jim keeps calling him. Phoebe grows increasingly worried because Gary has been dumped and isolated, so she texts him while also noticing that Matt is still sending routine proof-of-life messages from St. Louis.
Down in the lobby, the inn is already resetting for another wedding, which makes the previous weekend feel temporary and fragile. Pauline helps Phoebe figure out where to buy luggage, Lila texts from Canada, and Phoebe exchanges numbers with Jim because she wants some of these new connections to continue after everyone leaves. At Marshalls, Gary finally responds, jokes with Phoebe by text, and tells her he is in the hot tub. While shopping for a suitcase, Phoebe realizes she must return to St. Louis before moving into Geoffrey's mansion so she can say goodbye to Harry, close up her old home, and prepare for a new life.
Phoebe hurries back to the inn and finds Gary in the hot tub with Marla and Juice. After the others clear out, Phoebe and Gary move from teasing conversation into honesty. Gary says he spent the previous night driving aimlessly and then sleeping beside Wendy's grave because he could not face everyone at the hotel.
Gary explains that with Wendy he felt fully engaged in life, but with Lila he mostly drifted along, grateful that she could stage a vivid, social, normal-looking life around him. That gratitude made him ignore the emptiness between them, even when conversation failed and he felt he was performing instead of living. Gary admits he sensed something was wrong by the rehearsal dinner and even came to Phoebe because meeting her had briefly made happiness feel possible again, but he did not trust his own judgment and waited for a text from Phoebe to serve as a sign. Phoebe reflects that leaving harmful situations requires bravery and that she now has to learn to rescue herself instead of waiting for someone else to do it.
As a new bride inspects the pool area for the next wedding, Phoebe and Gary briefly become spectators to another beginning. Phoebe tells Gary she is going to become Geoffrey's winter keeper, and Gary encourages her in a way that makes the future feel real. Afterward Phoebe packs, returns a book to the lobby shelf, and imagines her coming life at the mansion. When she finally leaves the Cornwall Inn, she understands that the weekend is not only an ending but the beginning of a story she will keep telling about how she stepped back into the world.
