Chapter 21
Overview
As the wedding day begins, Phoebe senses that neither her reunion with Matt nor the wedding itself can restore life to its old shape. Lila's strange calm finally breaks when a wrong car arrives, and the trivial disruption exposes the real truth: she and Gary do not love each other in the way marriage requires. By helping Lila step away from the ceremony and by admitting that the wedding weekend saved her own life, Phoebe fully moves from passive despair into active, grateful engagement with living.
Summary
On the morning of the wedding, Phoebe wakes beside Matt and immediately feels that something is wrong. She has no message from Gary, sees wedding guests already dressed below her balcony, and realizes the ceremony is still moving forward. Although Matt has come to apologize and reconnect, Phoebe feels the distance between her old marriage and the person she has become during the wedding weekend.
In the bridal suite, Phoebe finds Lila unusually quiet and hard to read while the women get their hair and makeup done. Phoebe lets the stylist, Tiff, give her a side bang, and the small makeover makes her feel briefly transformed. Jim arrives with stolen palate cleansers as a peace offering for his behavior the night before, but Lila barely reacts, and even Patricia's usual champagne-fueled chaos cannot draw her out. Once they are alone, Lila asks Phoebe whether Gary would really call off the wedding, and Phoebe insists he would not, largely because Gary is too loyal to break a promise. Lila then pointedly tells Phoebe that nothing will ruin her wedding, "not even you," but her calm reads less like confidence than strain.
Back in her room, Phoebe dresses in the green gown she once planned to die in and reflects on how much has changed. Matt gets ready to attend the wedding as a guest, and Phoebe recognizes both the deep familiarity between them and the damage that cannot simply be erased. Matt tells Phoebe she looks beautiful, and she notices his effort to communicate more honestly, but Phoebe still cannot fully return to the life they once imagined together.
In the lobby, the crisis finally breaks. Lila sees that her requested vintage car has been replaced with an ordinary black luxury car and refuses to get in. Phoebe first treats the problem as one more absurd wedding detail and bluntly argues that the car does not matter, but Lila's fixation reveals the real issue. Sitting on the steps in her wedding dress, Lila admits that Phoebe lied when she said Gary loved her in the way Lila wants to be loved. Lila then confesses that she does not love Gary that way either, that she has doubted the marriage since her father's death, and that she hoped a perfect wedding might make the relationship feel right again.
Once Lila finally says the truth out loud, Phoebe shifts from frustration to real care. Phoebe tells Lila to go upstairs, take off the dress, and take a long bath, while Pauline offers practical help and even proposes booking Lila into one of the family's hotels in Montreal. When Lila mourns the expense and waste of the failed wedding, Phoebe tells her that all weddings are extravagant waste in one sense, but this one was not wasted because it saved Phoebe's life. Phoebe breaks down and thanks Lila for giving her, day after day, a reason to get up, dress herself, and remain part of the world, and the two women cry together.
