Chapter Three
Overview
Murderbot accompanies the team to the missing map region, where scanner glitches and disappearing hazard markers confirm that their survey data is being corrupted in the field as well as from orbit. The evidence pushes the suspicion of sabotage from theory toward reality.
Back at the habitat, the stakes rise sharply when PreservationAux loses contact with DeltFall Group and no emergency beacon has launched. Mensah decides on a rescue mission, and Murderbot successfully argues that its combat experience makes it too valuable to leave behind.
Summary
At the start of the day cycle, the team prepares to revisit the missing section of the planetary map. Murderbot is uncomfortable when Mensah places it in the hopper’s crew cabin with the humans, and it checks HubSystem records to confirm that the group had privately agreed not to pressure it after its earlier awkward interaction. During the flight, the hopper’s autopilot suddenly cuts out, but Mensah is already manually flying and prevents a crash. Murderbot sends her the log showing the failure came from a HubSystem glitch, adding to the evidence that their systems are unreliable.
When the group reaches the unmapped region, they find a plain of dark, glassy rock, lakes, and sparse trees. The scans behave oddly but do not reveal an obvious reason the satellites could not map the area. Because the team now openly considers sabotage possible, Arada argues they need direct evidence instead of speculation, and Mensah decides to land so they can take samples.
On the ground, the area feels unusually quiet. Mensah establishes a survey perimeter around marked hazards, but Arada and Ratthi accidentally walk past it because their personal maps no longer show the same hazard markers Murderbot can see. Murderbot stops them and discovers that their maps have been altered or glitched on one side of the survey area. For the rest of the morning, Murderbot repeatedly pulls team members away from hidden dangers while Pin-Lee struggles to make the mapping scanner function, showing that the problem affects both orbital data and field systems.
After the team returns safely to the habitat, the day briefly settles into routine. Murderbot avoids an automatic software update by diverting the package to storage instead of installing it. Then, at the end of the day cycle, Mensah gathers everyone to report a new problem: they cannot contact DeltFall Group, the nearby survey team.
The team reviews possible explanations and grows alarmed because DeltFall’s emergency beacon should have launched automatically if their habitat had been breached or their people incapacitated. Mensah decides to take the big hopper on an overnight trip to investigate. Although she initially plans to leave Murderbot behind to guard the habitat, Murderbot insists that its experience with hostile situations makes it the best resource for a rescue mission. Supported by Arada, Volescu, and Bharadwaj, Murderbot is included in the expedition, and it helps prepare the hopper before reluctantly boarding the crew cabin again.
