Chapter Twenty-two: Please Please PLEASE Stop
Contains spoilersOverview
A supposed break—ATM users detained in Charlottesville—proves a false lead, but police reveal Adam’s mangled wallet found upstream, prompting an expanded search. The family shifts to recruiting volunteers while Mia navigates fraught social media and old messages from Adam. A Covid contact-tracing voicemail reports Eugene’s exposure on June 20, suggesting a new lead.
Summary
Driving home, the family learns of another hit on Adam’s ATM card in Charlottesville, where security detained a couple supposedly matching Adam and Anjeli. Eugene becomes distraught, and Mom addresses him seriously, which seems to steady him. Mia imagines a dramatic police interception while grasping for hope and vindication.
At home, Shannon and Detective Janus await them. Janus shares mugshots that clearly are not Adam or Anjeli, admitting the description was wrong. She then shows photos of Adam’s wallet, torn and mangled, allegedly found the previous night at a riverside “bonfire” spot upstream. The finder’s story and the wallet’s only-damp condition raise questions; Janus notes animals could have scattered it and says alibis will be checked.
Because a deep tributary makes that area hard to reach on foot, Janus says the search will broaden with alerts and volunteers. Mom wants to join the field search, but Shannon urges the family to focus on tasks only they can do. Janus asks them to mobilize volunteers via calls and social media; she pointedly skips Eugene, which stings Mia, who responds by signaling solidarity with him.
The family launches outreach. John posts a compelling plea; friends amplify, including Brittany’s vigil post. When Mia checks her orchestra group, she finds them cheerfully celebrating an anniversary, leaving her feeling betrayed and envious of their ability to look away. She leaves the group.
Scrolling her messages, Mia discovers a long thread of Adam’s unacknowledged Instagram DMs—muted since she once told him to “please please PLEASE stop” tagging her—rekindling guilt and tenderness. Then Mom receives a voicemail from the Virginia Department of Health’s contact-tracing team: Eugene is a close contact from an exposure on Saturday, June 20, introducing a fresh and urgent lead.
