Chapter Eighteen
Overview
Summary
Back in 1921 Penang, Lesley finishes recounting her life and marriage to Willie. Rather than feeling unburdened, she is struck by a deep sadness for herself and, surprisingly, for Robert. Restless, she invites Willie for a stroll on the beach, where the night is warm, dark, and breezeless.
Walking along the sand, Lesley spots flashes of blue light in the sea. On a whim, she strips naked and wades in, goading the reluctant Willie to follow. She dismisses any awkwardness, noting Willie's homosexuality and the concealing darkness.
The two swim out into water lit by bioluminescent plankton, igniting cobalt fire with every movement. Their initial reserve dissolves into childlike laughter as they splash through the glowing sea, briefly freed from inhibition and grief.
Lesley dives deep, mesmerised, feeling an almost suicidal urge to keep sinking back through time. Willie grabs her and pulls her up just as her lungs give out. He suggests returning, but she insists she is fine, and the two float together on their backs beneath the stars, drifting in shared silence.
