At dawn on the docks, Odessa says a difficult goodbye to her family before boarding the Turan ship. She receives warnings from Mae, a rare apology and request for trust from King Roan, and a brief comfort from Margot, then sails away from Roslo with her maids. As Quentis fades from view, Odessa struggles with her new identity and encounters a suddenly talkative Zavier, who pointedly calls her Odessa Wolfe. In defiance, she hands him her crown and walks away.
Summary
Odessa arrives at the docks and is surprised to find King Roan, Margot, and Mae present to see her off beside the Turan ships. The Guardian scowls at Odessa but continues aboard without acknowledging her family. Supplies are loaded and the crew prepares to depart as Odessa freezes, overwhelmed by the looming farewell and fear of failure.
Mae approaches first, links arms with Odessa, and lightens the moment with teasing before warning Odessa to be on guard around the Guardian and to distrust the Turans. When Odessa asks if Mae knows Roan’s plan regarding Allesaria, Mae readily confirms it, underscoring that Roan has trusted Mae with information he withheld from Odessa. Mae bluntly urges Odessa to find Allesaria, send word, and “cut out the Guardian’s heart,” a statement that seems to draw an intense, possibly knowing glare from the Guardian aboard the middle ship.
Margot intercepts to offer an uncharacteristic embrace and a brief affirmation of Odessa’s strength. Odessa asks about her younger brother Arthy, but Margot says he is asleep and dismisses the concern. Roan then dismisses the others to speak privately with Odessa, tells her she can do this, and apologizes for his failures as a father, even invoking Odessa’s mother. He reminds Odessa to remember his instructions. When she presses him on breaking the Shield of Sparrows and invading Allesaria, he refuses details but asks for her trust; Odessa gives it despite not receiving full trust in return. Roan also regrets allowing Margot to dye Odessa’s hair and notes it once matched her mother’s red before escorting her to board alone.
Once on the ship, a Turan sailor removes the gangway, severing Odessa’s physical link to Quentis. Her lady’s maids, Brielle and Jocelyn, lead her to the stern to stay out of the way. Jocelyn has prepared a shared room belowdecks, implying Odessa will not share quarters with Zavier. Odessa clarifies she has not been summoned to Zavier’s bed. They scan the crowd: Jocelyn spots her mother, who continues waving; Brielle’s family could not arrive on short notice. Odessa promises to send the maids home someday, even as she doubts she can keep it.
As the ship leaves Roslo Bay, Odessa watches her family depart and notes Banner, alone on a cliff, saluting her from afar. She remains at the rail until Quentis vanishes from sight, tears blurring the view. She removes her crown, confronting the loss of home and identity.
Zavier appears unexpectedly and speaks freely, advising that Turan women commonly wear pants and that court gowns are mostly for parties. He welcomes her aboard the Cutter and addresses her as “Odessa Wolfe,” emphasizing her new married name. The name strikes her like a blow, highlighting her altered identity. In a defiant gesture, Odessa thrusts her crown into Zavier’s hands, remarking it could feed a family for years, then crosses the stern and leaves him behind, unsure whether he discards the crown into the sea.
