Chapter 49
Contains spoilersOverview
On the eve of the Jubilee, Wren infiltrated the base venue to plant small explosive charges as a decoy for the Uprising. She was discovered by Lieutenant Colonel Jayde Valence, who confronted her alone after a precognitive vision identified Wren as a traitor. A tense mental and physical standoff ensued in which Jayde probed Wren’s mind and sought to arrest or recruit her for study. Cornered and awaiting Cross Redden’s help, Wren used her incitement ability—ultimately voiced aloud—to compel Jayde to turn her gun on herself and pull the trigger.
Summary
As the Jubilee event approached, Wren drove a borrowed vehicle to the Command base venue with a pack of small explosives. Under Adrienne’s guidance and blueprinted directions, Wren slipped through security leveraging her Silver Elite clearance. She activated a jammer only after entering the kitchen to avoid drawing attention from cameras, then moved to a nearby supply room and placed the charges, linking them to an ignition system but not arming them.
While exiting, Wren was intercepted by Lieutenant Colonel Jayde Valence, who entered the room alone. Wren feigned searching for a caterer, but Jayde stated she had “seen” Wren set the charges via a vision and recognized her from the post–Julian Ash execution interrogation. Jayde questioned how Wren had fooled her for so long and marveled at Wren’s ability to endure the mental shock of telepathic penetration.
Jayde drew a silenced pistol and ordered Wren to disarm, then entered Wren’s mind. Wren silently reached out to Cross Redden for urgent help while masking and decoying her thoughts. Noting Jayde’s focus, Wren pushed back against Jayde’s shield and imagined it cracking, eventually slipping through enough to issue mental commands. She first tried to make Jayde lower the weapon, which Jayde partially did without conscious awareness.
As Jayde continued probing, she offered Wren imprisonment followed by "study" and eventual collaboration with the General, arguing the Uprising was corrupting minds. The offer triggered Wren’s resolve never to be Jayde’s subject, recalling the fragmented Modifieds and stolen blood stores. Wren escalated her attempt, trying to command Jayde to turn the gun on herself, but the impulse only made Jayde’s hand twitch as Jayde resisted.
Remembering Uncle Jim’s training that vocalized commands can strengthen incitement, Wren began speaking the directives aloud. With each repeated order—“Raise your gun to your head,” then “Pull the trigger”—Jayde’s resistance eroded. Jayde realized something was wrong, struggled visibly, and grew angry, but the compulsion intensified as Wren’s determination surged.
Despite Jayde’s strength and ongoing mental invasion, Wren’s spoken incitement overcame her. Under the compulsion, Jayde raised the pistol to her temple and, after a final command, pulled the trigger, killing herself. Cross had not yet arrived when the confrontation ended.
