Chapter 25
Overview
Summary
In her room at night, Cordelia is approached by her maid Alice, who carefully informs her that as the future Lady Evermore, Cordelia is expected to bring a lady's maid with her, and asks to come along. Alice admits she does not want to remain at the house once the Squire marries Evangeline. Cordelia gladly agrees, privately hoping she can save Alice from her mother's household, and Alice goes to inform the housekeeper.
Glancing out the window, Cordelia thinks she sees movement among the trees. Penelope's ghost speaks to her again, apologizing for vanishing last time and explaining that maintaining contact is like focusing tired eyes. Cordelia retreats to the water closet for privacy as Penelope describes how she became a ghost: she believes she 'died wrong.' When Evangeline compelled her body, Penelope resisted being forced to attack Evermore, so Evangeline shoved her consciousness sideways instead of down, then walked Penelope's body off the balcony.
Penelope describes a door-like opening in her chest after death that she failed to pass through because she was no longer fully attached to her body. Everything grew dim, and she could only perceive blurry blobs. She followed the brightly shining figure of Falada, sensing it was not truly a horse, back to the estate, where she eventually identified the stablehands and realized she was a ghost. Cordelia confirms Falada is Evangeline's familiar.
Penelope is strikingly calm and humorous about her murder, suggesting only that someone should avenge her. When Cordelia wonders whether Penelope could spy on Evangeline, Penelope inadvertently reads the thought and confirms Evangeline appears as a distinct three-dimensional blob. Penelope offers to try reading Evangeline's mind, but only when Falada is not nearby, since the creature might perceive her. Her focus slips again and she fades. Looking out the window, Cordelia sees Falada once more patrolling the grounds.
