Overview

Loth and Kit arrive in the plague-ridden, Draconic-ruled city of Cárscaro in Yscalin, where criminals are fed to cockatrices, lava rivers flow through the streets, and wyverns guard the gates. Installed in the Palace of Salvation as supposed ambassadors, Loth reflects on the connection between Yscalin's corruption and potential threats to Sabran, while he and Kit strategize about how to investigate the disappearance of the previous ambassador, Wilstan Fynch, without arousing suspicion. They are summoned to a physician's examination before their audience with Donmata Marosa.

Summary

Loth and Kit arrive in Cárscaro, the capital of the Draconic Kingdom of Yscalin, perched high in the Spindle mountains. As their coach approaches, Lady Priessa describes the city and warns Loth about cockatrices dwelling in the mountains. Loth sees criminals and traitors chained alive to the Gate of Niunda to serve as food for the Draconic creatures, which horrifies him. Six wyverns guard the gate as they enter the city.

Cárscaro is dominated by the Palace of Salvation, a tower of volcanic rock and glass, and a river of lava that flows in six forks through the city. Signs of plague are everywhere—veils, beaked masks, and red writing on dwellings. Upon arrival at the palace, Lady Priessa vanishes without explanation, and Loth and Kit are led through a labyrinth of corridors to their chambers in the ambassadorial gallery. The rooms are lavish, with candles that burn with true red flames.

Loth bathes and reflects on the mystery surrounding Yscalin. He considers that whoever arranged Queen Rosarian's murder in Cárscaro might also be trying to kill Sabran to prevent her from producing an heir and to facilitate the resurrection of the Nameless One. His thoughts turn to Ead, whom he trusts to protect Sabran. He recalls Margret's suggestions that he marry Ead, but he regards her as a sister rather than a romantic interest, and he longs for a companion he has not yet found.

The next day, Kit brings food from the kitchens, and the two discuss strategy on the balcony overlooking the charred plain that was once covered in lavender. Loth proposes asking Donmata Marosa about the fate of the previous ambassador, Wilstan Fynch, with courtesy. Kit argues they must be more cunning—acting as proper ambassadors while quietly gathering intelligence, and he jokes about flirting with the Donmata. A tremor shakes the city, and Kit writes a letter to Lady Katryen he knows may never be sent, acknowledging that Combe will intercept any correspondence.

A servant arrives to inform them that Donmata Marosa will receive them in due course, but first they must be examined by a physician to confirm they carry no sickness. Despite his reluctance, Loth agrees, and they prepare to follow the servant.
