Chapter 35, titled "The Cure for What Ails You", takes place in 1936 at Saint Bridget's, where Philipose finds himself feeling ill and disoriented, having just experienced a terrifying encounter with a frightening apparition.
Philipose learns he is in a leprosarium, or a hospital for people with leprosy, and must take a long and roundabout route home due to a washed-out bridge.
Doctor Digby Kilgour asks Philipose for help translating for a local boatman, and reassures Philipose that they will find a way to get him home. Kilgour mentions a friend named Chandy who will be returning later in a car.
Despite declining food and drink for fear of contagion, Philipose eventually gives in to thirst and drinks well water.
When the car finally arrives, Philipose is taken back by the opulence of its owner, Chandy, along with his young daughter. It is Philipose's first-ever car ride.
During the journey, Chandy praises Philipose for his bravery in saving a life, even suggesting that he should become a doctor - an idea Philipose secretly resents.
Upon arriving home at Parambil, Philipose is moved by the sight of his family who had been fearing the worst. Everyone is relieved and overjoyed to see him safe.
Chandy entertains the family with an embellished version of Philipose's adventures, tactfully leaving out any mention of lepers, and once again suggests Philipose has a destined future as a doctor.
The family celebrates his return with a feast, provided by the surrounding houses, then Chandy and his daughter Elsie say their goodbyes.
Finally at home, Philipose feels a deep attachment to his home and family and realises, despite his previous desire for adventure, that one leaves home at one's own peril.
