Chapter 30
Overview
Din briefs Ana and Miljin, and Ana concludes Fayazi Haza is likely an uninformed puppet pressured by the senior Haza lineage, not the architect of Kaygi’s secrets. Using Din’s finger-traced memory of Sazi writing, Ana extracts the Hazas’ recent communication targets, connecting them to cantons already tied to Blas’s secretary.
Ana also advances a workable theory of how Jolgalgan infiltrated the Haza estate—hiding in the cache hole and using Apothet adaptations to move in the dark—then sets Miljin to hunt for strength-enhanced personnel records and prepares to interrogate the party witnesses. Ana’s final observations about Fayazi’s bruised arm and her axiom’s silence sharpen suspicion of coercion and concealed information.
Summary
Din Kol reports to Ana Dolabra and Captain Miljin in the Iudex tower, recounting everything he saw at the Haza estate and repeating Fayazi Haza’s pointed questions about what Din and Ana have found, plus the strange “third” her unseen visitor mentioned. Ana praises Din for resisting Fayazi’s manipulation and concludes Fayazi’s fear seems genuine.
Ana argues Fayazi likely is not the mastermind: as a lesser branch heir suddenly promoted after Kaygi Haza’s death, Fayazi may be a clumsy, uninformed puppet receiving opaque orders from the senior Haza lineage. Ana and Miljin discuss how Kaygi could have used patronage to cultivate Engineers for favors, echoing how Blas was treated, but they admit they still lack direct proof tying the scheme to the murders.
Pressed by Ana about the Haza rookery, Din admits he examined the scribe-hawks’ cubby labels to learn where messages were sent and received, but the locations were written in Sazi. Alone with Din, Ana extracts the full truth: Din memorized the labels by finger-tracing their shapes. Instead of questioning Din’s method, Ana has Din recreate the motions by dipping his finger in ink and writing with his eyes closed.
Din reproduces four sent destinations: the Engineering Headquarters of the Mitral Canton; the Engineering Headquarters of the Bekinis Canton; the Apothetikal Headquarters of the Qabirga Canton; and the Engineering Headquarters of the Juldiz Canton. Din recognizes Bekinis and Juldiz as cantons connected to a wall pass belonging to Blas’s secretary, linking the Hazas’ correspondence to earlier suspicious travel.
Din then reproduces the one received message location: the Haza Prime Hall in the First Ring of the Sazi lands, implying the senior Hazas contacted Talagray quickly after Kaygi’s death and that Fayazi’s household lied about quarantined communications. After sharing this with Miljin, Ana proposes a practical theory for Jolgalgan’s access: Jolgalgan may have infiltrated the grounds early and hidden in the cache hole until the party, then navigated dark passages using Apothet self-alterations (like Nusis’s night vision). Ana tasks Miljin to obtain records of recently posted, strength-enhanced Legion personnel and plans interviews with Uhad, Nusis, and Kalista; she also notes Fayazi’s concealed bruising and that her axiom gave no numerical assessments, hinting at coercion and missing data.
