7. I Accept Gifts From A Stranger

Overview

Percy and Annabeth realize Grover has likely found the Golden Fleece, the one object that could heal Thalia’s tree, and they identify its location in the Sea of Monsters. When Percy forces the issue before the camp, Tantalus authorizes a quest but spitefully awards it to Clarisse instead, blocking Percy through fear and threats.

Left desperate, Percy is secretly visited by Hermes, who equips him for an unauthorized journey and hints that the coming quest may affect Luke as well as Grover and the camp. The chapter shifts Percy from frustrated camper to someone on the brink of defying orders and launching the real rescue himself.

Summary

After the Stymphalian bird attack, Tantalus blames Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson and punishes them with kitchen patrol. While they scrub dishes with the harpies, Percy tells Annabeth his dream again, and she finally connects Grover’s location to the Golden Fleece. Annabeth explains that the Fleece can heal blight and restore a land’s strength, which means it could save Thalia’s tree and the camp’s borders. She also identifies the Sea of Monsters as the modern Bermuda Triangle, where Polyphemus’s island must be hidden.

Percy argues that rescuing Grover and retrieving the Fleece should become an official quest. At the campfire, Percy and Annabeth present their case to the whole camp. Percy then realizes the numbers the Gray Sisters gave him were coordinates, and Annabeth confirms they point into the Atlantic near Florida. The campers support the idea so strongly that Tantalus is forced to authorize a quest.

Tantalus immediately twists the victory by naming Clarisse, not Percy, as the champion. He frames the choice as a reward for Clarisse’s success in the chariot race and shuts down objections with a cruel ghost story that is really about his own punishment and hatred of children. He also warns that no one may leave camp without permission and threatens violators with expulsion and the harpies. Percy is left furious and powerless while Clarisse goes to consult the Oracle.

Later, Percy returns to his cabin and speaks with Tyson, who offers to help but also reveals his pain at feeling unwanted because he is a Cyclops. Percy tries to reassure Tyson, though Percy privately questions Poseidon’s care after Tyson’s hard life. Unable to sleep and worried about Grover and the camp’s worsening sickness, Percy sneaks out to the beach to think.

On the beach, Percy is approached by Hermes, disguised as a jogger. Hermes confirms that Percy is considering going without permission and strongly nudges him toward doing it, giving him two magical gifts: a wind-containing thermos and powerful emergency vitamins. Hermes also hints that Percy’s quest may save more than Grover, possibly even Luke, and insists that family should not be abandoned. Before vanishing, Hermes produces three travel bags, points out a passing ship, and leaves Percy only minutes to decide before Annabeth and Tyson arrive.
