Chapter 18
Overview
Poppy helps Alex overhaul his Tinder profile, and their playful coaching brings back a tender memory of his writing success in Tuscany. What begins as teasing turns tense when Alex’s swiping choices remind Poppy of Sarah and trigger a jealous argument about what kind of people they really want. The chapter matters because both of them finally say they would choose each other, pushing their unresolved romantic tension into the open.
Summary
In Palm Springs, Poppy and Alex sit together in bed and work on Alex’s Tinder profile. Poppy immediately objects to his long, résumé-like bio and to his group photo, arguing that both make him hard to read and unlikely to attract matches. Wanting to help, she looks through her phone for a better picture and lands on a photo she took in Tuscany when Alex learned that Tin House would publish one of his stories.
The Tuscany memory reminds Poppy of a rare moment when Alex openly showed joy, and she gives him that photo because it captures his real happiness. Back in the present, Poppy rewrites his bio into something shorter and funnier, emphasizing that Alex is stable, responsive, and appealing without overexplaining himself. Their joking stays affectionate, but it also exposes how carefully Poppy watches him and how naturally intimate they still are.
As they talk, Alex doubts that women would want him, so Poppy tells him that several of her past friends had crushes on him and that he simply failed to notice. Alex agrees to test the new profile by swiping through women on Tinder while Poppy watches. He dismisses several women quickly, and when he finally pauses over a polished, conventionally sweet-looking woman, Poppy reacts sharply because the woman reminds her of Sarah and of the type of woman Alex once dated.
Poppy’s irritation turns into a broader complaint about men choosing safe, "sweet" women over more dynamic ones, while Alex pushes back that women like Poppy might see him as boring. The argument becomes personal when Alex claims Poppy would never swipe right on him, and Poppy angrily insists that she would. To prove their points, they look at Poppy’s own profile, and Alex sincerely says he would choose her too. That mutual admission leaves both of them shaken and silent, and Alex finally breaks the charged moment by reaching for the laptop and asking what she wants to watch.
