6 I BECOME SUPREME LORD
Overview
Chiron’s tour of Camp Half-Blood teaches Percy how the camp is organized, why Grover’s future is in danger, and why Sally’s fate may not be as final as Percy feared. Annabeth then explains that Percy is a half-blood whose dyslexia and ADHD are signs of divine heritage, but his parentage remains undetermined.
The chapter’s turning point comes when Clarisse tries to bully Percy and the bathroom water violently obeys him, protecting him while humiliating Clarisse. This first clear sign of Percy’s supernatural affinity hints at his true father and makes Annabeth see him as important for the camp’s coming conflicts.
Summary
Chiron gives Percy a tour of Camp Half-Blood. Along the way, Percy notices other campers staring at the Minotaur horn, glimpses a strange movement in the attic of the Big House, and learns more about camp life, including the strawberry fields that help support the camp. Percy asks about Grover, and Chiron explains that Grover may be judged harshly by the Council of Cloven Elders because Percy was lost in New York, Sally disappeared, and Grover was unconscious when Percy brought him to safety. This makes Percy feel guilty and more determined to understand what happened.
Percy asks whether the Underworld is real, hoping that Sally may not be truly gone. Chiron confirms that the Underworld exists but urges Percy not to dwell on it yet, which deepens Percy’s suspicion that Sally’s fate is still uncertain. Chiron continues the tour, showing Percy the forest, training grounds, and dining pavilion, making it clear that camp is meant to prepare children for real combat with dangerous creatures.
When they reach the cabins, Percy sees that each one belongs to a different Olympian and reflects the nature of that god. Some cabins are empty, including Zeus’s, Hera’s, and the lonely sea-themed cabin three. Chiron leaves Percy at cabin eleven with Annabeth. Inside, Percy meets Luke, the friendly counselor of Hermes cabin, and learns that cabin eleven houses newcomers and travelers until their divine parentage is identified. Percy, being “undetermined,” has no proper place yet.
Outside, Annabeth explains more directly what Percy is: a half-blood, the child of a mortal and a god. She says Percy’s dyslexia and ADHD are not defects but signs that his mind and body are built for the ancient Greek world and combat. She also warns him that monsters do not truly die and confirms that the Fury Percy fought is still out there. This conversation forces Percy to confront that the myths are real and that his unknown father is almost certainly a god.
The conversation is interrupted by Clarisse, daughter of Ares, who provokes Percy and drags him into the bathroom for a humiliating initiation. As Clarisse tries to shove Percy’s head into a toilet, the plumbing suddenly responds to Percy’s fear and anger: water explodes from the toilets and showers, blasting Clarisse and her friends out of the room while leaving Percy completely dry. The stunned campers witness Clarisse’s defeat, and Annabeth immediately recognizes that Percy has unusual combat value, telling him she wants him on her capture-the-flag team.
