Chapter Five
Overview
Murderbot’s arrival on RaviHyral immediately turns deadly when killware destroys the shuttle’s pilot bot, forcing Murderbot to trust ART enough to let it take over and save everyone on board. That sabotage confirms that Tlacey wants Rami, Maro, and Tapan dead, not negotiated with, yet Murderbot chooses to keep protecting them when they refuse to leave.
While arranging a safer public meeting, Murderbot also uncovers evidence that Ganaka Pit’s closure was deliberately obscured and spots a mysterious ComfortUnit searching for SecUnits. By the end of the chapter, the clients have survived a second ambush, Tlacey’s bad faith is undeniable, and RaviHyral is established as both a lead in Murderbot’s investigation and an increasingly dangerous trap.
Summary
Murderbot meets its three clients, Rami, Maro, and Tapan, at the embarkation zone and boards a public shuttle for RaviHyral with ART’s implanted comm interface hidden inside its body. Because Murderbot expects trouble, it quietly takes control of the shuttle security system while ART scans from the transit ring. During descent, killware suddenly destroys the pilot bot, which would have caused a fatal crash. With only seconds left, Murderbot lets ART into its systems, and ART uses Murderbot’s connection to seize the shuttle controls, make the needed course correction, and land safely at an emergency dock.
Once they are off the shuttle, Murderbot tells the clients that the person they came to meet has just tried to have them killed. It urges them to return immediately to the ring, but Rami, Maro, and Tapan insist on staying together and still want their deleted work recovered from Tlacey. Because they will not leave, Murderbot decides it cannot abandon them and tells them to force any meeting onto ground of their own choosing instead of going to Tlacey’s compound.
The clients arrange a meeting in a public food service area designed to interfere with surveillance. While watching the negotiation, Murderbot keeps control of nearby security feeds and continues investigating Ganaka Pit. It discovers signs that an old mining route was quietly diverted after a sudden closure, suggesting Ganaka Pit was erased from public notice rather than openly shut down. At the same time, Murderbot detects a nearby system specifically searching for SecUnits and identifies the source as a ComfortUnit, an alarming sign that someone on RaviHyral may be looking for constructs like it.
At the table, Murderbot privately advises Rami not to mention the shuttle attack and to stay focused on business. Tlacey, wrong-footed because her clients survived, does not attack openly; instead, she listens to their demand for the return of their files in exchange for their signing bonus and postpones any handover until the next day. Her response convinces Maro that Murderbot was right: Tlacey never intended to bargain fairly and has only been lying to them.
Murderbot leads the clients away through a less crowded tunnel toward a high-security hotel, using the station map and camera feeds to manage the route. When three armed men follow and the tunnel cameras are deliberately cut, Murderbot intercepts them just as they move on the clients and incapacitates all three with overwhelming speed and force. The attack confirms a second murder attempt and shows that local security is compromised or cooperative. After sending the shaken clients ahead to the hotel lobby, Murderbot reaches them there and promises to get them off RaviHyral.
