Chapter 48: Darrow: The Tickler
Contains spoilersOverview
En route to Io, Sevro tortures the captive Diomedes, provoking a brutal confrontation with Cassius that ends with Lyria injured. After Darrow halts the fight, Sevro reveals Harmony murdered his infant son, fueling his rage. Darrow issues tough love, insisting Sevro either recommit to the mission or leave, stabilizing team focus before Io.
Summary
Darrow is jolted awake by pounding and finds Lyria reporting that Sevro is torturing their prisoner, Diomedes. Darrow, Cassius, Lyria, and Aurae force open the medBay using fire protocols. Inside, Sevro is pulling Diomedes’s teeth and shocking the exposed nerves, seeking information on Athena’s ships and Kalyke. Aurae forces Sevro back to tend Diomedes, and Darrow orders Sevro away.
Cassius confronts Sevro in the cargo bay. Sevro goads Cassius with cutting insults about his failures—Julian, Quinn, Mustang, Octavia, the Republic, and Lysander—until Cassius swings. Sevro fights dirty, landing groin shots, a headbutt, and jabs, but Cassius rallies with elbows and a kick that sends Sevro crashing.
When Cassius moves to finish, Lyria rushes in to intervene and is accidentally struck by Cassius’s backswing, knocking her out and breaking her nose. Darrow ends the bout with a decisive kick that floors Sevro and orders Cassius to get Lyria to the medBay. Sevro mutters that Cassius is a liability and calls Darrow a drowning man.
Pressed about Victra, Sevro finally breaks and reveals the source of his fury: Harmony murdered his infant son, Ulysses, nailing him to a tree on Mars. He learned this from the stowaway at Quicksilver’s. Sevro claims he must be the “Goblin” because “Sevro” is weak and unworthy of family, clinging to brutality as armor.
Darrow counters with hard truth and compassion, reminding Sevro of his leadership and the strength of their friendships. He lays a boundary: recommit to the mission or take the airlock, while offering to help Sevro get home if needed. Darrow reframes their purpose—fighting for their families—and leaves to check on Lyria, reflecting that only Sevro can unlock his own prison of grief while his friends wait.
