Chapter 55
Overview
Meryn discovers that Stark is Cratos's rider and has secretly known about his bond with Anassa all along, while Anassa's unshielded emotions create an intense pull between Meryn and Stark. Upon placing the ancient crown on her head, Meryn is thrust into a vision of Queen Chiara Sturmfrost's final battle against a Siphon ancestor of the Brightbane line, witnessing the fall of the original Nocturnan monarchy. Waking, Meryn realizes she is a descendant of Chiara's surviving baby and the rightful queen of Nocturna—a truth Stark confirms by kneeling before her.
Summary
Meryn paces anxiously in her cell while waiting for Anassa's mate and rider to arrive with the crown. Anassa confirms through their bond that her mate and rider are on the way, accompanied by Venna, who is waiting for a guard change to slip in unnoticed. When footsteps finally approach, Meryn is stunned to see Stark round the corner—he is Cratos's rider and, by extension, Anassa's mate's bonded partner. As Anassa and Cratos touch noses through the bars, Anassa drops her emotional shields for the first time, flooding Meryn with the overwhelming intensity of the mate bond. The desire and longing that courses through Meryn's veins redirects toward Stark, making her hyperaware of him in ways she's never experienced. She manages to place a thin mental filter to regain composure rather than fully blocking Anassa out.
Fury replaces desire as Meryn realizes Stark has known about his bond with Cratos—and therefore his connection to Anassa—the entire time. Every confusing interaction, every moment Stark and Anassa seemed to be colluding, every refusal to share information about the ancient book, all of it traces back to this hidden bond. Stark confirms he knew from the start and shows no remorse. He passes the crown through the bars, explaining that Venna is outside keeping watch.
Meryn takes the ancient crown—an exquisite piece featuring two golden wolves leaping toward each other around a ring, their paws cradling a large opal that twins the stone in her mother's necklace. The moment she touches it, power pulses through her. When she places it on her head, a bolt of pain strikes and she is pulled into a vivid vision of Nocturna's past.
In the vision, Meryn sees the castle as it once was: unified, warm, with direwolves and humans moving freely together without the walls that now divide Bonded from royals. She is drawn to the throne room, where Queen Chiara Sturmfrost sits nursing an infant, wearing the crown, the opal necklace, and the wolf-pommel sword, with a massive silver-white direwolf at her feet. The peace shatters when a soldier announces that Siphons have infiltrated the palace. Chiara hands her baby and the opal necklace to a woman, ordering her to flee and protect the child.
Chiara mounts her direwolf and rides into battle, eventually confronting a Siphon man who resembles Killian and King Cyril—a Brightbane ancestor. He taunts Chiara, revealing he has already killed her husband and her three older children, and that his men are hunting the baby. The devastating grief breaks Chiara's fighting spirit, and Brightbane disarms her, slashes her direwolf's throat with the wolf-pommel sword, and the queen collapses and dies from their severed bond. Brightbane declares that the Bonded will become his instruments of vengeance.
As the vision fades, the mysterious voice from Meryn's dreams speaks: "Chiara Sturmfrost is dead. Meryn Sturmfrost has returned. Long live Queen Sturmfrost." Meryn wakes in her cell, the pieces falling into place—the opal necklace passed from Chiara's baby down her family line, the visions her mother and she both received, Anassa forcing a bond on her for a reason, and the crown that feels like it belongs on her head. Meryn asks Stark if she is the rightful queen of Nocturna. Stark drops to one knee, hand to his chest, and says, "Welcome home, my queen."
