In the vision, Meryn sees the castle as it once was: unified, warm, with direwolves and humans moving freely together without the walls that now divide Bonded from royals. She is drawn to the throne room, where Queen Chiara Sturmfrost sits nursing an infant, wearing the crown, the opal necklace, and the wolf-pommel sword, with a massive silver-white direwolf at her feet. The peace shatters when a soldier announces that Siphons have infiltrated the palace. Chiara hands her baby and the opal necklace to a woman, ordering her to flee and protect the child.

Chiara mounts her direwolf and rides into battle, eventually confronting a Siphon man who resembles Killian and King Cyril—a Brightbane ancestor. He taunts Chiara, revealing he has already killed her husband and her three older children, and that his men are hunting the baby. The devastating grief breaks Chiara's fighting spirit, and Brightbane disarms her, slashes her direwolf's throat with the wolf-pommel sword, and the queen collapses and dies from their severed bond.
