I: Weapons - Tristan
Overview
Atlas Blakely recruits Tristan Caine, a working-class witch who has reinvented himself as an executive at the Wessex Corporation and is engaged to billionaire heiress Eden Wessex. Tristan's rare ability to see through illusions and perceive truth sets him apart from ordinary illusionists. Atlas reveals knowledge of Tristan's hidden origins and offers him a mysterious once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, challenging Tristan's carefully constructed life as a gilded cage.
Summary
Three hours before the present timeline, Tristan Caine is working late in his corner office at the Wessex Corporation in London, finishing financial valuations for medeian investment projects. His colleague Rupesh Abkari interrupts him, reminding Tristan that the annual Wessex family holiday is imminent and that his fiancée Eden Wessex is growing impatient. Tristan, engaged to the daughter of billionaire investor James Wessex, has spent years cultivating a polished persona to distance himself from his working-class East End origins and his estranged father, Adrian Caine—a despicable, cultlike figure whom Tristan severed ties with during university. Tristan's position as a future heir to the Wessex fortune depends on maintaining this careful façade.
While reviewing proposals, Tristan notices that Rupesh's illusion charm concealing a coffee stain on his tie has worn thin—evidence of Tristan's unique ability to see through illusions and detect falseness. Tristan also knows, though he doesn't confront it directly, that Rupesh has been sleeping with Eden, visible to Tristan through the shoddy contraception charm Rupesh wears. Despite this betrayal, Tristan remains strategically focused on his long-term goal: social and financial security through the Wessex name.
A stranger enters Tristan's office—Atlas Blakely, who introduces himself as a Caretaker. Atlas demonstrates knowledge of Tristan's true background and his rare magical ability: not merely illusion but the power to see through illusions, perceive value, detect falseness, and discern truth. Atlas distinguishes this from common illusionism, calling Tristan rarer than he realizes. He places a shimmering card on Tristan's desk containing a transportation charm, offering Tristan what he describes as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity far beyond the Wessex corporate world.
Atlas frames Tristan's current life as a gilded cage, arguing that Tristan deserves better than James Wessex, Eden Wessex, and Adrian Caine. When Tristan asks if this is blackmail, Atlas denies it and says he simply wants to offer Tristan a choice. He gives Tristan a couple of hours to decide, leaving the card behind. After Atlas departs, Tristan is left contemplating the offer, weighing his carefully constructed life against the unknown possibility Atlas has presented.
