Chapter Four
Overview
SecUnit secretly enters the terraforming facility, reaches the geo pod, and recovers undeleted digger logs that may contain the GrayCris evidence it came to find. Before it can withdraw, hidden hostiles attack the assessment team, injure Ejiro, abduct Hirune, and nearly kill Don Abene.
SecUnit saves Abene by revealing abilities no human could have, forcing it to admit that "Rin" has a SecUnit on-site. Abene chooses immediate action over suspicion and accepts SecUnit's help, shifting the chapter from covert surveillance to an open alliance against an active, unknown threat inside the facility.
Summary
As the shuttle approaches GrayCris's abandoned terraforming facility, SecUnit uses Miki's feed and the facility schematic to watch the team's arrival. Don Abene insists on full safety gear, and Wilken leads the entry into a powered but eerily inactive habitation section. The corridors show no sign of panic or damage, but there are no active resident systems despite functioning lights and environmentals. While the team advances toward the bio pod, SecUnit slips out of hiding on the shuttle and enters the facility to search the geo pod for evidence.
Moving alone through the silent facility, SecUnit is unsettled by the atmosphere and by the storm visible through the structure. It rides a lift to the central geo pod and accesses the dormant diggers' interface instead of the stripped main consoles. SecUnit discovers that someone ordered the diggers to dump their logs, but the buffered data was never erased before shutdown. SecUnit copies the surviving data to its implanted memory, believing it may contain the evidence it came to find.
While SecUnit is finishing the copy, Miki detects strange ambient noises near the assessment team. SecUnit realizes an unknown hostile is moving toward them and orders Miki to warn the humans and determine its direction. Miki tries to get the team to shelter in place, but Wilken and Gerth instead attempt to withdraw toward the shuttle. SecUnit races back by lift, already concluding the team will not escape in time.
SecUnit reaches the bio pod junction in the middle of the attack. Wilken and Gerth fire down a dark corridor, Ejiro is injured, and Miki is closing a heavy hatch to protect the group. In the narrowing gap, a fast red, many-fingered creature grabs Don Abene by the helmet and tries to pull her through the closing door. SecUnit throws itself into the gap, forces the hatch open long enough to reach Abene, and saves her by releasing her helmet before the creature can tear her apart. At nearly the same time, another hostile drags Hirune away down the corridor.
Saving Abene exposes SecUnit's true identity. Wilken and Gerth immediately aim their weapons at it, and SecUnit briefly calculates that killing everyone would be the safest escape, but refuses to do it. Instead, SecUnit claims it is a contracted SecUnit working for Security Consultant Rin as extra protection sent by GoodNightLander Independent. Miki supports SecUnit, and Abene, recovering from shock, turns the confrontation back on Wilken and Gerth by demanding answers about the attack and Hirune's disappearance.
Once Miki confirms Hirune is missing but still alive, Abene takes command. She orders Brais, the injured Ejiro, and Gerth back to the shuttle, tells Kader to alert the station and warn of possible raiders, and insists on going after Hirune herself. Wilken falls in with the decision, and SecUnit offers help under Rin's supposed instructions. After warning the others not to use the lifts, SecUnit moves alongside Abene as Abene, Wilken, and Miki begin the search.
